Hey chaps,

I am a huge F1 fan and figured it'd be nice to have an open thread to discuss the upcoming season.

So, I'll start

Impressive pace by the Brawn GP cars. Some people surely think that they might have been running on fumes but apparently, Brawn strongly denied that. And he's not bull-talker.

Also, The Flav has a few issues with some teams ... Linky

So what do we all make of the new F1 scoring system?

For once in my life, as i'm no longer a big F1 fan I don't have a strong opinion for or against.

Actually mate, the new scoring system was voted down by the FIA (it was proposed by the FOTA, Formula One Teams Association) which chose instead to award the Drivers' championship to the driver winning the most races. If two or more drivers are tied, the actual points scored (based on the 2008 system) will determine the champion.

No changes for the Constructors' championship as it will still based on points.

Always been a big F1 fan , but been losing heart last couple of years, if this year turns out to be another Lewis Hamilton show  that'll be me done , No strong views on the new rating system as yet , will have to see how it pans out after the first 3/4 events  to get change of circuits come into effect

Sorry Loz, I know he was Ron Dennis's prodigy but the guy's still got talent and would not otherwise have won last year. He and the team played a good tactical game and got some lucky breaks on the way, but most of all they pushed until the end of season. Those who say he wouldn't have one under the new rules may be proved wrong; he played by the rules of the day.  Different day, different rules, different style perhaps?

I'm not sure about the team broadcasting the fact that they are struggling with the pace this year.  My guess is that there will be a miraculous recovery and young Mr Hamilton will once again ruffle your feathers.

Thats not really my beef Phil , whether he should have won or not, just seemed that every time i turned on the box, over 50% of the commentary was about Lewis , not so much about McClaren and the other teams/drivers , it was far too orientated  around him being the all new thing since sliced bread and fitting the politically correct slot / new kind of clean living role model , = boring   i want my heroes to be exciting and a bit edgy    hair raisers even

See thats whats happens when you live in the past , even Bernie admitted that its got tame , the reason why they changing the rules

Just my take    no offence to the Lewis fans

regards loz

Loz

I know exactly what you are saying and it seems to be the way things always are with our UK broadcasters.

I remember when Nick Faldo was at the top of the golf tree. Every tournament was about him and also in tennis Pussycat, sorry Tiger Tim Henman - now it's Andy Murray.

And in any athletics event Brendan Foster insists on concentrating on "gallant UK runner(insert name)finishing 8th - she might get in to the semi final as a fastest loser".

Nothing against any of the above but jingoism rules at the BBC/ITV.

Dave

I'm not sure I agree with some of the comments. For obvious reasons Schumi was always in front of the cameras as a driver, but have you noticed the repeated pit shots of him since he retired?

Yes it would be nice to see something of the lower echelons (teams and drivers) regardless of the nationality, but the media stick to a formula and target names which, for them at least, works; it just happens to be Hamilton until the next name appears. The exception to any rule is of course the good old BEEB which somehow manages to economise by sacking people while blowing vast amounts of money on pc broadcasts for the benefit of only one viewer (and he's watching without a licence anyway), so it will be interesting to see their coverage this year.

As for Bernie, he is part of the problem imho. He and Mr Mosley created the monster that is F1 today, and it lost its soul along the way. Instead of playing around with the scoring system they should:

Allow a maximum of 3 pit crew per car
Cap the budgets and force teams to work from garden sheds instead of gin palaces
Replace CAD systems with slide rules and log tables
Use wind tunnels only for communal hair drying
Ban all software except for Nomex

Ohhh, it's been a long year.

Hey chaps,

I am a huge F1 fan and figured it'd be nice to have an open thread to discuss the upcoming season.

Was a fan of F1 but have found it seriously boring the past few years, in fact post 1991, with the advent of the Williams active cars, then Schumacher etc. F1 has lost it’s way big time. Bernie and Max have finally worked out that in the midst of a world recession spectators want value for money – and F1 ain’t that, hence the recent rule changes to re-introduce overtaking. Just typing that sentence makes me laugh :) A race series without overtaking – just how on earth did they get away with it for so long. Well, quite simply the powers that be worked out that true F1 fans would turn up to the opening of an envelope if it had the term ’F1’ attached. And letting the technical side spiral out of control would keep tech obsessives like Patrick Head, Adrian Newey and Ron Dennis happy. Well people just can’t afford to not be entertained in these cash strapped times if they are to splash the cash. So, we find this new season introducing all kinds of new rules.

For once I am praying that the first race does not disapoint. I have high hopes for Vettel, and have even popped a bet on him with some tasty odds. I want to see Kimi get back to form and run Lewis hard. An in form Kimi would wipe the floor with Massa. A quicker Renault should see Alonso up at the front too. So we could have a 3 way fight: Lewis, Kimi, and Alonso fighting for the title in slippy slidey cars. I for one can’t wait. And please can the FIA ban high front nose cones so that these cars can look like race cars again.

As regards last year being ‘The Lewis Show’ on UK terestrial TV, can you blame them. What other selling point was there? I do just feel that if Lewis gets some serious competition he may just buckle a bit.  And if the Brawn GP cars were to do well with Merc engines how embarassed would Honda be? They did nothing with Honda engines and then clean up with Merc engines. Whoops...

The first two races' results will be on hold pending the Court of Appeal ruling on the new diffusers. Only in F1
