Hi All Had a long enjoyable and faultless drive home last week, parked the car up and the next day when attempting to go out in car the clutch pedal sank straight to the floor and stayed there, I had to manually lift it back up to it's normal position where it seemed to latch slightly, is now very loose for first part of travel with a bit more resistance at the bottom of the travel, when the engine is running and you depress the clutch at the bottom of the travel you can hear a tinny rattling sound (bit like a Ducati clutch sounds if anyone is familiar !) my first thought was slave cylinder as master is fairly new but I don't seem to have lost any fluid and pumping does not seem to make much difference and there is no sign of fluid around the gear box. I know a trip to the garage is inevitable, just wondered if any ideas of what it may be? Sorry about the lack of punctuation, that's not how I typed it, seems to be a Mac thing! Cheers Aldo

Hi Aldo,

It sounds like the clutch diaphragm spring has broken, or at least the little fingers of the spring that the throw-out/thrust bearing pushes on, have broken.

Other possibilities are the throw-out bearing could have collapsed, or the clutch control lever/fork may have broken.

I am outing money on the thrust bearing lugs snapped off. Happent to me twice soon after I bought mine. Second time round tuned out the previous owner adjusted the pedal travel badly. Let me know if you need the data to do it properly once you change the bearing Good luck

Thanks Bill That's great having searched a few posts on here that was the conclusion I was starting to draw,your help may come in useful as couldn't get it to a specialist but it;s at my mates place who has worked on just about every car i've ever owned and is a good mechanic and I trust but occasionally on this type of job a little specialist knowledge is a godsend Cheers Aldo

I think your problem will be the one or both of lugs on the thrust bearing, did the clutch become heavy to operate before the problem?
This happened to me when I had a 3200GT only 1200 miles after a main dealer had fitted it! 

On inspection of the part that had failed when the clutch was replaced, I felt it didn't look up to the job personally.....

Not particularly any heavier that it has always been I don't think, spose it could have been on it's way for a while, guy's have it on the ramps now so should know tomorrow, I'll keep you informed. Thanks Aldo

Hi Bill It is the control lever/fork that has snapped, would you recommend replacing the whole clutch whilst the gear box is out, I'm not sure how many miles mine has on it or inspect it and take it from there, or just do the the control arm and the thrust bearings ? Any pointers much appreciated Thanks Aldo

I am sure Bill will drop by later burt meantime, Eurospares do the complete OEM clutch kit (centre / cover / thrust bearing) for just under £500 and therefore your labour is the most expensive component. Therefore suggest you replace the complete clutch as well as the control arm.

Double check that the control arm is correctly fitted and most importantly, the thrust bearing can slide easily and evenly with no snagging along the g/b input shaft. Snagging will result in a a heavy clutch and will overload the thrust bearing carrier lugs causing premature failure. In turn, a heavy clutch will also put excessive load on the crankshaft thrust washers and excacerbate wear hastening excessive endlfloat. Also recommend checking the endfloat

Thanks for that I had checked out the eurospares site and priced it David Askew also has kits at slightly less and he is local to me, looking at a few posts on here and Indy quotes would I be right in thinking the job ends up about 60/40 labour to parts? Thanks again for the advice Aldo

Sorry Aldo just got your message. Yes, for the cost of the clutch from eurospares, I would change it. As Nigelo said the labour to change it later far outweighs the cost. End float should be checked, but as I said, the pedal travel must be adjusted correctly so it doesn't overload the crank and those lugs on the release bearing. Unfortunately I am not close to a manual to give you these figures. I will be back in the uk on the 7th and if no one has posted these I ll post the pictures and data for your info. As Nigelo said, you need to make sure the bearing slides freely on the shaft, as it might be bent from the damage to the bearing. Cheers

Thanks all, a clutch kit was on ebay yesterday for £475 including the vat! but didn't find it until after it ended but have mailed the guy do fingers crossed as a good price. Thanks again everyone for all the advice. Aldo
