The main reason that it is flaking is either down to the seat not being degreased/cleaned properly prior to re-dying or that it hasn't been cared for properly since with regular feeding . you'll find that most seats if they are done properly will have the entire face or even the whole seat re-dyed as it's practically impossible to get a perfect colour match , so the whole seat (or both) is done to give a even finish. You can remove the dye , i use cellulose thinners , it takes some doing and is a bit messy but it can be done effectively . After removing with thinners i always retreat the leather with gliptone conditioner to get some oils back into it before re-dying. The main problem you will have is when you do remove the dye is that it will reveal what was underneath, the reason why they were done in the first place, so you will still need to get them re-dyed or trimmed. The thing to remember redying /connolising/ painting the seats (whichever you want to call it ) is not a permanent solution , although it is a cheaper option than re-trimming which is why most people have it done . Saying that , if it's done and maintained correctly you should get a good 2 to 3 years out of it though I've got some photo's of a set of 355 seats i did recently , i'll dig them out and show how i did it. ORIGINAL: willoughbybrown The drivers seat on my 2000 3200GT has started to flake. I have had the car for about 4 months and obviously got caught up in the whole Maserati-ness of the test drive as whilst I noticed that the seat had had some work, I didn't realise that it involved painting virtually every seat surface! The car has done 94k and it is expected that the seat would have some wear. I understand that acetone (nail varnish remover) or a high grade thinners would remove the paint, but am concerned about using that much thinners and what damage it could do to the underlying leather. The piping at the back of the seat base (where it meets the base of the upright) has split slightly (@3mm) too. Can anyone advise me? As far as I can see it, I would need to either: a) look for a good secondhand seat in cream leather (and hope that it was not too badly worn) - if only to roughly match the wear to the other seats. b) strip back the seat and get it repainted (I'd rather not) c) retrim the seat (and probably have to get the passenger seat done too) The rest of the interior is in remarkably good condition (far better than my BMW coupe after 7 years and 64k).
