I am currently looking for an Indy to do my first ever pre purchase inspection.
I am fully convinced of the wisdom of the pre purchase inspection and have no issues with the pricing; this could save you a fortune down the line.
However, what does the inspection consist of?
Are there a logical number of key systems and components on a check list?
Do Indies normally demonstrate that their inspector has sufficient experience across all the key potential problems?
 
I realise that some may be more organised than others, yet that does not mean the remainder are no less thorough. So would a typical Indy inspection have a structure as a MOT would and, will a report/check sheet be issued?
 
Having followed the related posts on this forum my biggest worry is that evidence of past repairs to panels and any structural damage may go unnoticed.
 
Would you recommend discussing and documenting you key concerns with the Indy prior to the inspection date?

Welcome to the forum.

Okay, lots of questions there, my thoughts below:

Q. However, what does the inspection consist of?
A. (1) I have had Indy inspections done that were effectively the mechanics findings generally looking over the car then written on a piece of paper as they went along. (2) I have had Indy inspections done that were the mechanics findings written on a piece of paper with printed categories on it (3) I have had Inspections done that consisted of a range of ratings and coments for a range of fields regarding the vehicle, on a proper printout report. In hindsight, I would only ever go for and Inspection consisting (2) or (3) - but from an experienced hand only!

Q. Are there a logical number of key systems and components on a check list?
A. There should be: bodywork, interior, engine, gearbox, electrics, air-con, steering/tracking, etc etc

Q. Do Indies normally demonstrate that their inspector has sufficient experience across all the key potential problems?
A. You must make sure they are well versed with the car you are looking at, by asking before hand, and checking forums for owners experiences with them.

Q. I realise that some may be more organised than others, yet that does not mean the remainder are no less thorough. So would a typical Indy inspection have a structure as a MOT would and, will a report/check sheet be issued?
A. While I want to see a printed out thorough report with rating, comments etc, if I am having a Maserati checked out and the tech is an experienced 55 year old warrior mechanic who writes his findings on a piece of paper -  that is worth 10 times a dealer checklist from a 21 year old dealer technician with little experience comparatively. Experience is priceless with these cars!

A. You must make sure the Inspector understands about the nuiances of bodywork repairs, good and bad. An experienced hand will have seen many cars whereby this becomes second nature.

A. Yes, But one thing I would add is that most of these inspections don't always chek the service history thoroughly enough i.e. gaps in history, dealer recall work being done, V5 check for excessive owners etc. If they don't they you must and run your finding with the Inspector and us before you part with your hard earned. Me anal? Yes. But better that than get lumbered with a lemon.
