I feel that my dip beam xenon lights are set too high and they are dazzling on coming traffic. Several people have "flashed" me over the last few nights, and I don't think it's becasue they like the car or know me!

I know that there is a potentiometer on the near side front and rear wishbones and that these can seize sometimes. I think this has happened to mine on the rear and the lights are set in the maximum high position as a result.

Looking at the links on the wishbone, there is an adjustable screw linking the potentiometer to the wishbone. Does anyone know what the correct default positon should be?

I took mine apart last night and cleaned it up and the arm now moves freely, but I'm not sure what position I should tighten it up in and under what load (ie full fuel tank and luggage etc).

When I have checked the front sensor too, I can then adjust the manual setting on the headlamp units themselves to get the correct setting, if necessary.

I was told the front ones regulate the rise caused by acceleration, and the rear load [luggauge].

I think you're right with that thought. My only internet results are for a Saab which quotes front for acceleration and braking and rear for load. But having taken the rear one off, cleaned it and got it working again, I'm not sure what length the tie bar should be to set to for the correct default position on the potentio and with what load! I'm going to have a play and take a few pictures as I go to see what turns up.
Thanks for your feed back tho.

David,

I have photos of mine at the back taken when at emblem...it may give you an idea and I can bring them down to Bristol Auto Italia if that helps.

I would surmise that it should be at its minimum setting when you have no one in the car and the boot is empty, so adjust to just about to be activated when you re fit and then ask some one to push the rear down whilst you watch the motors adjust the beam hight.

Hello, I too have a problem with my left hand side Xenon, actually failed the MOT because the beam is too low. The right hand side light is fine. I have checked the front and rear sensors on the nearside and these move freely. Also checked the fuse and this is ok. Any ideas chaps? Thanks in advance as this is so frustrating :-)

If you start your car with the headlamps on, do both of your headlamps adjust the beam down and then back up again?
If you move the sensor on the near side rear axel, do both headlamps adjust?

The first point will test if the adjusters are actually functioning, the second whether the load adjuster is working. If you have one beam high and one low and the beams of both lights move, then the left hand needs manually adjusting. If the the beam doesn't move, you may have a fialed adjuster motor.

Hello David, thanks for the guidance. I've taken a good look at the headlamp unit from under the wing with the wheel removed and with the ballast unclipped can see into the headlamp assembly. I can also see two adjusters and note that the internals move pretty freely. In terms of turning the headlamps on, neither of the lights point down then adjust upwards as they used to. At the moment I've sometime to take another look before my car is having a clutch replaced at Meridian near Southampton. I'm thinking of adding this to the list, but as I'm handy with spanners would rather fix this myself. I did check the movement of the adjusters on the front and rear legs last week and they move freely. A bit of a ramble, but you sound like you know what you are talking about so any advice welcome. Thanks Paul
