Has anyone experienced or know what might be casuing a battery to drain on an 05 4200 couple manual. Today was the fourth time the AA came out in 6 weeks. The garage say they can't find a drain and after the AA start the car again they find no drain so we know it's an intermittent drain, most probably something with the electrics.

Any help much appreciated on this rather annoying problem.

Cheers

This seems to be a fairly common problem, and to resolve it I leave mine connected to a CTEK battery charger/reconditioner when not in use. One item that has been highlighted is the Navtrak system which is quite often fitted as standard on post 2004. Although when questioned, they said that if not currently subscribed to there will be no extra drain, but I'm not convinced! See my previous post on this matter:
http://www.maseratiforum.co.uk/fb.asp?m=58426
I found my Navtrak battery backup tonight, it is located to the right hand side of the battery in the boot. I also think that it has it's own fuse already in the car's fuse system located under the dashboard position 33 5A ochre yellow described as 'Alarm system, preset for sattelite alarm'. Can anyone elaborate or confirm this? I have yet to phone them again to confirm that it does not use power if not subscribed to, as a bit like a mobile phone, if it cannot get a connection, and is hunting it uses a lot more power. The answer might be to remove the fuse to see if it makes any difference!

I recall reading elsewhere that the navtrack system does have some sort of lithium battery that does give up the ghost after 5 years, after which it may drain the main battery - not sure how you confirm this other than by speaking to navtrack.......

My coupe GT is 5 years old and has the (deactivated) tracker fitted but as it is on a trickle charger I have no way of knowing if I have a similar issue.

Sorrry I can't help more

Thanks for your reply gents. Turns out Navtrack is fitted so I'll either get that disconnected or reconnected with a new battrey unit.

going belt and braces at this though it may be a good idea to start with a new main Battrey. HR Owen report £200 for the official Maserati Battrey and £74 to fit it. Seems a bit steep to say the least. Any thoughts on this or another heavy duty battrey for the 4200 Coupe, what it should cost and where I can get one fitted ?

Great thought so. Can you let me know what battrey it is you used, was it a maserati one, where did you source it ?

It is a DIY job but a real knuckle scraper, 10 minutes is an admirable time, took me a little longer as my battery was a very tight fit. Make sure and connect the battery breather tube before you start pushing the new battery into place...................

Once fitted then there is a reset procedure to follow (let engine idle for 10 minutes etc) a quick search should turn that procedure up for you.

Good luck

Hi Steven,
I also fitted a a new Varta battery (Blue Dynamic - E-005) last month at a cost of £82.24 from the local Motor Factors. Just follow the sound advice found on the forum and it's no problem.
Good luck,
Ronnie

Mine which was replaced in Paris about 18 months ago by the previous owner is a Varta which has the right gas outlet connector and is a Blue Dynamics E11 Varta code 574 012 068 with some smaller numbers to the right 3132 It is 74AH and 680 Starting power.
The CTEK smart charger I referred to earlier is model No XS 800, which is the same item as rebadged by Maserati and sold as a Maserati accessory at about £95 but at a greatly reduced price of about £40. Since Maserati sell this same item, it indicates that it is a common problem. May I suggest that it might be worth going for this charger/reconditioner as a cheaper alternative, as it might just revive your battery to peak performance, as part of its process is to de sulpinate the battery to allow more receptive charging. Any further feedback on the Navtrak draining would be welcomed, and how to disconnect/remove fuse/ change battery pack backup.

Just as a data point - my 2004 GS has the tracker fitted but not subscribed, and I have NO battery drain. It has sat for a few weeks and just starts up. It's a Maserati battery too, and I can believe it's the original.

Porsche 928s suffer battery draining, it's usually the glove box light or the marker bulbs in the doors. It may be worth looking at your car in the dark to see if any bulbs remain on.

Thought I would add my comments to the Tracker/Battery drain issue.

I have a 2007 Coupe CC which has Tracker system fitted. We live in a hilly part of S Wiltshire that has no mobile reception. About six months ago I decided not to continue with my subscription because the insurance value of the car dropped below the threshold that required me to have Tracker fitted.

Like many of you my car does not do much mileage so I am in the habit of re-charging every two weeks or so. However about 3 months ago, on return from holiday, the (OE) battery was completely flat and would not charge. I bought a Bosch replacement, yes a tight fit but 10 - 15 minutes to do (my friends at Emblem Sportscars provided excellent 'phone advice).

So with a new battery and no other wiring fault (I have yet to check the actual current drain from the battery "at rest" to absolutley confirm) the battery is completely flat unless I re-charge every 4-5 days. Given my comments regarding local mobile reception, my experience does support the view that Tracker is continually hunting for a signal and draining the battery rapidly. I will investigate Tracker fuse removal and report back.

It is interesting to consider why the battery did not drain when the car had an active Tracker system given that the cars operating and garaging circumstances were identical?

Interesting reply RJABmaser, it sort of supports my findings. I have been too busy to recontact Navtrak, but on my last contact, they did suggest that I did recontact to make sure that although subscription was not in place, that I checked that I was actually disconnected. Is it perhaps a ploy to get us to resubscribe? Again I will report back.

To conclude my contribution to the flat battery - Navtrack discussion.

I contacted Cobra (who now own Navtrack) a few weeks back explaining the problem with the car draining the battery flat after a few days and no mobile reception. They sent out one of thier guys to investigate. He unplugged the connector to the Navtrack system which is behind the rear seat. I can confirm that the problem has been solved by this action - battery holds it charge as you would expect. So well done Cobra - many thanks.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for this!

I do use the tracker - it works - but good to know the backup battery has a limited life.  To date no problems and no battery issues but it can only be a matter of time...

The tracker unit and connections can of course be hidden in a number of places.

Battery draining in 5 days to the point of non-starting so I've removed the tracker as it is redundent - saves about 2kg and the sealed 6v battery was totaly dead and therefore I'm happy to confirm it is the likely cause of rapid battery failure!

Interesting dismantling the tracker boxes for elctrical bits (moding xboxes for kids etc so always looking for donor stuff) the PCB's are made by Motorola.

Will report if this cures the problems.

Ok, there are no hard and fast rules as to where the trackers are located as they are a stealth install they won't tell you even if you ask!

The GPS needs clear sky to work so is likley to be under rear parcel shelf like mine was, this will give you a good starter to track it down...

Pull off the boot rubber and ease out the four black button clips on the underside of the top back boot liner this will pull out towards you and reveal the fuel tank etc. You are looking for a stiff coax cable about 3mm dia. disapeaing through a piercing accompanied by a thin cable for the phone ariel. Whilst you are there try and identify other cabling that is non-factory and wrapped up with sticky insulating tape by the mile and zip tied to the loom. Mine had a soldered connection in the loom over the top of the tank to a 4mm thick blue and red cable (removed and re-insulated later in this story).

Having found this I cleared all of the boot linings by removing the plastic trim by the latch then the floor, the battery corner and the nearside corner after the rest of the tank cover. Mine was supposedly all fixed up to the inner rear wing brace to the near side but the battery pack had detached and had been swinging loose behind the lining! All of the wiring associated with it was wrapped in insulation tape. Two screws about 120mm apart secured a pair of non-descript aluminium boxes approx 130 x 70 x 20mm. the battery was in a similay sized if slightly thicker black plastic tray.

Following the cables back there is a main earth secured to the car and a main feed going back to a fuse by the battey. removed the tracker battery and fuse with the main isolator off cut the wire from the blue and red over the tank and reset the main isolator. I then checked the functions of the car were unaffected before removing all of the redundent bits.

Rebuilt the boot and I am enjoing the hopefully drain free life a couple of kilos lighter!
