Mate of mine has a Discovery 3 languishing in Moscow and has a desire to get it back to the UK, as a result he's asked if I would be interested in driving it back to the UK with him some time in October. Having done the route finder thing the journey itself does not look too arduous, around 37 hours non stop, and offers a couple of interesting stop overs; e.g. Berlin, Amsterdam and a few border crossings - Belarus, Poland, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France.

Sounds great, but reality may be different - Moscow to Minsk, 11 hours one road.

Any one got any suggestions, recommendations, advice, warnings etc?

Plenty of Red Bull, never did me wrong on a couple of Euro-trips me and my mates have done.

Obviously places like France, make sure you have the usual warning triangl, bulb kit, high vis. jacket for each passenger etc, european breakdown might be a wise move too. Have you driven on the continent before too?

Used to UK to Iran, back in the late 70's early 80's  5400 miles in 3 and 1/2 days  great fun  in  brand new Jags , tho Yugoslavia Bulgaria and Turkey were a different story then what with the Kurds , we were advised to always carry plenty of copies of Penthouse to bribe the Police in the eastern block countries, worked too

Because times are different roads are quite good now  , but there are still plenty of car Hijackings  in Russia and the ex  Baltic  states , so take no jewelry show no affluence  have mobiles hidden  and stored with help numbers , make sure all relevant papers visas / car ownership and insurance are in order , oh and 5 star AA cover

have fun

regards loz

Moscow traffic is terrifying, signposting is lousy (and in Cyrillic!) but if he knows his way around you'll be fine. Just make sure all your papers are in order and start applying for your 'business visa' now.

I was there October before last just as the first snow fell. I really got very fond of that town (I was living in the Ritz which made life easy), not much chance of ever going back really. Make sure you allow yourself a day or two there, some magical things to see

And you will also need to apply for an International Drivers Permit which compliments your UK/EU Driving Licence in non EEC countries.

Thanks guys, some useful tips.

My pal started on a 6mth contract as a retail consultant, that was three years ago. Now still telling them how to run shops but on a more 'rewarding', less time consuming basis. So no need for a car and no need for his russian driver.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers

Andy
