Supplying TB's to independent Maserati-specialists in several countries now and a Maserati-Ferrari dealer in Germany lately, gave me the opportunity to gather lots of information via those valuable contacts.(Not only about the 3200, i learned some interesting things about the 4200/Grandsport as well ) I like to share some info with you guys, just to show that the TB really NOT allways is the cause of CEL. Listed as one of the most common faults is the TB indeed, there is no way around that. Next one is/are the knocksensor(s). Then one or both lambdasensors, followed by theThrottle pedal potentiometer. The crankpositionsensor was mentioned a few times, as well as a leaky intakemanifold due to loose screws/gaskets. Sometimes the ignitioncoils fail, but that is not the most difficult one to diagnose. Still, even without having the proper diagnosetools, one could learn more by looking carefully to the behaviour of the car; do we have a solid limpmode, or just a CEL with only limited performance. In most cases i try to ask as much info as possible before one orders a new TB. If you did not diagnose thouroughly, you could end up doing "trial and error". Of course, when after mounting a fresh TB problems still occur, both the buyer and myself are unhappy. For this reason, the Maserati-Ferrari specialist in Holland, wich i supply the TB's to, does NOT offer the TB as a spare anymore. Too often something else was wrong he said, leaving the customer unhappy after buying the unit and having to leave the car there for further investigation. This is why i allways advise to let a Maserati specialist check the engine ECU, to find out what is wrong exactly before ordering a TB. There are two independent Maserati specialists in the UK now that mount my contactless units, so maybe this would be the best route to go, leaving no room for faillures. If this is not possible, i allways ask people do do some measurements on the pedalpot at "no throttle" and "full throttle", ignition on/engine NOT running. There allso is quite a lot of info regarding connectors/ the pedalpot at this forum, wich could help finding the cause of throttle problems. As i mentioned earlier, watching closely to the behaviour of the car, one thing could help: If you have a solid limpmode, that means max 1200-1500RPM, in most cases there is something wrong in the throttle circuit indeed.(TB/pedalpot) If you have a CEL with only a limited performance, in most cases something else is wrong. Very common are the knocksensors or lambdasensors. Still: only a solid diagnose via the SD2/3 tester will show what is wrong exactly. I really hope i was somehow helpfull with this info. Regards, Luuk.
