Just working on my route down to Italy ,  anyone whose done the Stelvio bit  before  can advise the best way to to approach the stelvio pass ,  southern approach coming up from bormio  or from the north     Davos to  Stelvio   Hopefully , followed a few days in Lake Garda ,   presently  waiting for confimation date of the factory tour so as to plan the remainder of the break

Out of curiosity, how much is the factory tour?

We're really undecided about what to do after the Le Touquet bash. Would like to carry on similar to your trip but really not sure what with the kids (4 and 6). We might even stay on in Le Touqet. Any chance you could copy me your itinerary when done so I can take a look? As much as we'd like to, long driving stints might be too much.....then again the Italian lakes sound FAB
Cheers, Andy

Hi Loz

Davos to Stelvio from the North would suit your journey best if you're travelling to Lake Garda afterwards.

You'll have 2 other amazing passes (Fluvial and 1 other I can't remember) before you get to the Stelvio. Down the Stelvio to Bormio gives you options to head to Lake Garda. I followed the windy sat nat route rather than the motorway initially and it's hard work. From Bormio you climb again and it takes a while to get to Garda as a result. We left Bormio at 10ish and got to Garda at 3ish.

I don't think there's a better direction to do the stelvio in. It's all good!

I'd recommend a stay in Bormio after Davos to Stelvio (especially if you're travelling from before Davos).....to discuss what you've just encountered over a few well deserved beers!

Cheers Jol  already booked hotel just outside , i want to do it again on my own,  early in the morning around 6 am  when ther'es absolutely nothing about , rigging camera's  and exhaust recording in the car ( so i can re- watch and dream  when im an old man)    Ive done most of the alpine routes several times before , but always in lesser cars and mostly the(diese van,  sking clobber etc  ) when the kids were young   so the early morning blast will be a real treat

regards loz

loz, i headed north from garda through Arco and Trento and curved round via cles....

There's a section of road, about 10 miles or so, that runs parallel to a small lake and some mountains, that heads through a combination of semi covered tunnels and fast sweepers before you get to Swiss border control.....can't remember the route name (the maps i used are at the other place, bugger), maybe someone else knows....this piece of road is $%£**£!!ing AWESOME... if you can find it do it..... tthat run one of the highlights of my driving life!

Remember your 10 euros for the tunnel into Swits as they don't take cards or £ and its a long treck back to Davos for a cash point...I speak form experiance. dohhh

Oh yes Peter , i'll have a pocketfull of them , hopefully  the Larini system will be settled in a little by then , im gonna be doing all the tunnels i can find    gonna be driving right through Switzerland and coming into Italy from the Northern route via Stelvio pass , will stay one night in either St Moritz or Bormio and then on to lake  Garda the following day   , all this planning is frustrating  without the car sitting outside.

Going to be a tight run thing ,Like Lewis  hopefully picking the car up from Larini 2 days before we leave  , would of liked a little more local testing  time  really  , just to put any gremlins to rest ,

Oh and good news,  Anna from Maserati GB has just confirmed the Factory tour  for the   22nd Oct    10 am      exactly at the beginning of the window i was hoping for    congrats  Anna   if you ever get to read this

regards loz

Loz, or indeed anyone else - I have the Italian touring club road map/book of Italy 1:25000 Ithink (which has a bit of Switzerland in it) and I might have a spare copy kicking around if you would like to borrow it if I can find it

How very   fortunate for me  you should offer Maurizio,  I have all the normal  video camera / digital camera's,  one of which is by all accounts is quite good   well it cost a lot  and does a lot    if only  i'd ever taken the time to find out how to operate all the functions   ,     im at the moment hoping a friend is going to supply me with a small attachable camera  i can attach to different points of the car  outside   so as to capture that  beautiful exhaust note  and  some of the low down road  footage   one often only sees on TV ,

If your up for  sorting out  what ever indeterminable  mess  i manage to download onto disc/hard disc  i'll happily treat  you to a decent slap up  and a chauffered lift to the next event   hows that sound                            Like bribery to me   but there you go

regards   hopefull  loz

You're on! I actually have a camera (so called "action cam") which I used to shoot the onboard videos on my old GranSport. If I manage to dig it out, happy to lend it to you, as I am in no rush to shoot onboard footage of me driving the wife's Prius ... hahahahaha!
