I am removing the heads on my Merak to change the sodium filled exhaust valves for solid ones.I have found that I need to break the two duplex chains in order to remove the heads and was wondering if anyone knows if the chains have special links for removal or if a special link removal tool is required and if so where could one be purchased from.

Status: offline 		hi, just catching up on merak postings and wonder if you completed the valve swop. I'm thinking of doing a top end overhaul over the winter and could learn problems & costs from your rebuild

Status: offline 		Yes they do have spring links, note which direction they point and replace them in the same direction,

I'm not far off starting a strip down and rebuild of a Merak engine to. Makes me think we 3 ought to get together and buy bits in bulk to perhaps get a bit of extra discount?? Not my purpose for writing, just a thought.

Thanks for replies.Since I posted original message about duplex chain I decided to remove engine from car.
Currently have it on bench in bits.Have come to a bit of a stop at present as need new main and big end bearings at £300 each set(need to do a bit of saving).Decided to get heads done at engine shop but had to order valves first.A Merak needing work such as mine is definately not a cheap project but o.k if done over a long period of time.
Interested to hear how you get on with your engine work.My biggest concern going forward is putting all the chains back on and getting the engine timing set up right.

I am not sure where to get bearings from yet.
So far the only suppliers I have found are Brodie and Bill Mcgrath.
But looking at around £300 for each set.

just as an aside; if you're changing you're chains and looking to save money take 'em down to your local bearing and chain suppliers, they'll size them up and cut them to length, new split pins.  Check it's a good quality chain, Regina et-al.  Should be a lot cheaper than anything with the name Maserati attached to it.  I got my Ghibli chains this way, it took about ten minutes and cost about £60 as I recall.

Do you have a Merak shop manual?  it should give info on resetting you cam timing.

Status: offline 		Coops is on the money regarding chains, the 2 top chains are around £30 each and are Reynold, from my local engine shop, but I am getting a chain from Andrew brodie for the front which is 30% stronger and with the oil spray mod will hopefully eliminate chain problems.

Status: offline 		Just for your info, I drilled a new oil hole 0.5mm into the gallery supplying the front main bearing, using the tool supplied.  To modify the front chain lubrication supply.

Be aware that the SM engine and the SS engines are slightly different where the main gallery is concerned.

the SS has 3 x 6mm (approx) holes whereas the SM engine has 1 large hole.

The trajectory of the tool with the SS engine, means it just misses the oil hole, it was rectified by drilling a 2.5mm hole in between the original drillings to join the pilot holes together.
