Can anyone suggest a solution? I have a 1992 Biturbo Spyder, on which there is intermittent speedometer activity ~ i.e. a lot of the time the speedo does not respond, occasionally it does (usually at about 40mph, for some reason) and sometimes flicks up to about the 40 to 50 mph mark for half a second and then drops back. I presume the cause is faulty connections (as it does occasionally work) ~ possibly caused by corroded contacts......I understand that the speedo sensors are on the gearbox, so I presume starting either there or behind the speedo itself.

The other problem is frequently occurs is that on wet days the electrical system on the dashboard, and which includes wipers (yup - on wet days!!), horn and indicators, fails. Lights are still OK and everything else seems to function fine. Sometimes the system reconnects and sometimes its intermittent. Often the electrics can be OK until the indicator is used. I presume water is getting into something and shorting it out, although it does not drain the battery.

If anyone has experienced this and found a solution or has suggestions, information would be gratefully received.

My understanding is that the ranger diff has the speedo pick up in the diff not the gearbox - so worth checking the connection there. As for the electrics, it could be the same fuse/relay that controls alll those items, so worth checking/replacing that perhaps?

i suspect you have a poor earth/earths. the fact that so many systems that are separately fused (fed) are affected reinforces this. when you use your indicator it is probably providing a path of least resistance due to the high resistance earth(s). wet typically exasperates these type of faults.

try and locate and check as many earthing points as you can find- if not successful perhaps a trip to an auto electrician who could probably find the problem quicker.

Hi,

I had a similar problem with my 1991 Maserati 222 SR and the problem was connection of speedometer. One of the four connection sockets where cable plugs in on speedometer was broken of and caused the problem for me. To repair the connection I had to completely take out the speedometer from dashboard In order to get to these connection sockets. They are soldered directly to speedometer circuit board. It might help to check this.

On my car the speedometer pick up is in the gearbox and I believe you have it the same way.

Hello,

First look at the speed sender ant the diff. poor connections/dirt. 80% of the cause you describe, also could be the sender itself, often is. Then if not solved check the connections on the very easy to take out instrument cluster.

Second, don't waste any more time. You have a fuse box problem!! Not easy to take the bolts from the engine bay but you can do it. Inside the car, above the passenger foot rest you will find "her". Take the connections, all are diferent, remove the box, open it and resolder every contact, Be careful because the soldering sheets are fragile and the solder points are to be soldered on the various sheets...
The relays connections are the most important and where your problem is. One of the relays controls everything related with the steering comands, lights, dash... and alternator charging...

All the best

Just joined...

About fusebox/elec. problems...

As a 15 year owner of an 88 Spyder, my suggestion is: replace the fusebox! This solved all my minor elec problems from 7 years ago. It is a bit of work to do but, definitely a manageable DIY project. Try to support the wiring harness that is plugged into the fusebox in the cabin so, as to prevent the extra weight of the harness to stress the fusebox connector 'pins'. Clean the relays and holders in the eng. compartment every year.

Also, PLEASE DRIVE YOUR CAR OFTEN. These cars must be driven often or they will rot to death. After 126 000 KM, my car runs better than 15 years ago. Yes, regular maint. has been done but, my engine still uses ZERO oil.

Hope that helps,

R
