Hi,

I think it's about time I got my hands dirty. Is there a step by step guide detailing how to remove the front grill? (and the tools to use). It needs a proper clean already; can anyone recommend a product to use on the chrome surround / trident?

I'll also look to buy and add my own mesh but I think I read that it 'ideally' needs to be spot welded back onto the frame?

As usual, any advice welcome.

Regards
C

Craig
If the grill has not been removed in a long time, it is an absolute swine to shift! It is held in place by four screws across the top and then four push in bullet connectors across the bottom, and it is these push in bits the corrode together over the years.
I good spray of WD40 or similar over a number of days before trying to remove will help.
If you are not worried about the existing black mesh then you can always just cut holes in it and push the connectors from behind to get things moving.
Always put some tape on the painted areas of the bumper around the grill so that you don't scratch it when the grill finally comes loose!
As for fitting the mesh, the black mesh is spot welded to a black frame which slips over the chrome grill. I cut out the new mesh using the old frame as a template and then used black cable ties to hold the new mesh to the old black frame. Once this was slipped back over the chrome grill you can not see the cable ties.
When refitted to the car, the four cullet connectors and four screws hold the whole thing nicely in place!
I still have my old grill at home, so if you want me to take any pictures and post them on here so you can see what the reverse side looks like, I will happily do that later.
Hope that helps, a little!
-David-

This is what is behind the grill.
There are four of these bullet connectors pushed into clips, these are the little blighters that get stuck!

How the black frame slips over the chrome grill:

At the top the black metal surround is held in place by the 4 screws you can see across the top of the chrome surround when it is still in place:

Screw securing the top centre at the back of the mesh:

More good pictures, David.
However they do highlight the dubious quality of some of the parts used on these cars. In the same area is the front number plate bracket that is nearly good enough for a child's toy car!

It's not good, but to be fair, I did pull at this old grill knowing that I had the new one to put back in it's place, so the old mesh took a bit of a blow!
I think the number plate bracket said Heinz on it when I looked
Still they spent to money were it counts (make up your own answers)

ps Is it "grill" or "grille" or doesn't it matter??

Which part are you looking for? or is it all of it??

The chrome surround can be replated and it's a very solid bit of metal, the mesh can be replaced with stainless as per other posts on here.

Regards
David

I'm a new owner of a 2004 CC 4.2.and would like to upgrade the tatty chicken wire grille mesh to stainless steel. This thread (and others) have been very useful (thanks).  If possible I would like to find (buy) a used inner grille surround (black and rust) so I can spend some time cutting and fixing the stainless mesh to the inner frame before attempting to remove the existing grille.  Can anyone suggest where I could find one?
What a great forum! A great source of information for a novice owner.

Hi Wombat and welcome to the Forum!
I have an old grille which is available for such projects.
I will PM you with the details.

David

Hello, is the Trident screwed only to the grille so all will come out in one piece, I've tried to remove this weekend with lots of DW40, the ends of the grille move a little but the middle won't budge. Thanks.

HI
You have taken the four screws out of the top??
The "bullet" connectors are always very badly corroded and take some shifting I'm afraid to say.
Put plenty of masking tape around the paintwork so that you don't damage it as you try. Then it is just pulling and twisting that will eventually get the grille to come out.
Assuming yours is the same as mine (ie not the face lift or GS) then the trident is held on by one screw UNDER the grille surround.
Regards
David

Hi David, yes the acrews are out, the bullet connectors at the ends are loose its the middle ones which are sticking. I've got very sore fingers so I'd thought I'd better check before I pull any harder. Will try again ths afternoon.
Thanks
Tony

Success, it's off. Had to do a lot more wiggling with WD40, two of the spot welds snapped off but are easy to repair. I'm also going to replace the trident with one I purchased recently. Also will give everything a good clean and polish. Thanks again, very satisfying.
