Having had my gransport for two years now, and loved it, I am thinking about getting a granturismo. I took a test drive in one yesterday, and it all felt very planted, if a bit slower, guess that must be the extra weight. Anyone else made the swap and have thoughts on this?

That is a move that lot of people are now making. I have upgraded from a manual 4200 to a GTS Auto but did test drive a regular GT. To my mind the extra performance of the 4.7 over the 4.2 is not that noticeable with an auto gearbox but I was buying new and the 4.2 now makes no sense new IMHO.

They are different cars and the GT/GTS weighs 200kg more. The GT/GTS is more mature and the 4200 feels very old in comparison, which of course it is given that the body shape has been around since 1999.

I take the view that the GT/GTS is not a 4200 replacement but is a step up to compete with 6 series, CL class, DB9 and Continental GT (I know that this is broad range) whereas the GS is more of an M3/RS5 car. This move suits me as I get older and I appreciate the extra space, the easy gearbox and fewer erratic electrics. When driven hard using the paddles, the GTS has much better traction than the 4200 and much better steering.

Let us know what you do.

Thanks for that, interesting obs re the 4.2 vs the 4.7, I did wonder if I should consider that too but definitely going for the ZF auto. My GS has ben totally reliable thus far apart from the servicing, and as it is an LE, the interior is actually nicer than the GT i test drove, wonder if there is a leather headlining for the GT as an option, I;ll be buying used, but there are plenty for sale. My only reservation is that my GS has only depreciated 2k in t years, and suspect I'll be taking a much bigger hit on the GT but such is life. Some holiday time to do some more research is here!

Most GS owners find the standard GT a little slow due to the added weight and no real increase in power. Thus most have a preference for the GTS with the extra power to compensate for the additional weight.

Thanks

If it was me I would be going for the GT-S MC Shift, much more like the GS is but with a much better gearchange!
