Pondering my forthcoming major service on the Cup, I am considering doing the toy-easy bits myself and leaving the "more serious" details (valve clearances/timing belt/tensioner) to a professional.

I thought I'd have a crack at an oil & filter change and a coolant change.

My silly questions are; has anybody here personally undertaken this on Ghibli?

I know where the oil comes out and where it goes in and where the oil filter is (!), I don't know if there's a tool I should be using (with a strap?) to get the filter off and how tightly it should go back on...?

Also with regard to the coolant; (I know less about this) I don't think there's a drain-plug as such is there? Do I pull the bottom hose off the radiator and is that enough...? Do I refill from the expansion tank? Do I have to premix a flavour of coolant before adding or does the (Tutela?) stuff go in straight...?

Any answers and or insults to my lack of intelligence would be greatly received...!

Hi mate

In short no,who are you going to use for the belts etc? I would only recommend Martin & Phil MP Supercars.

Can't see it being too difficult at all. Sump plug is easy to see and is prob 17mm, i do oil changes on my bike, using a fabric strap belt type and either a socket set or ratchet spanner to twist it off and this is exposed to all the elements. I doubt your's has seen rain let alone road salt and grit !!

A bit like my gear box oil, by the time you have bought the oil and filter, you are not actually saving much money but it is the sense of achievment that you working towards..............

There appears to be a drain plug at the back at the bottom on the right hand side of the radiator as viewed from the front. I guess emtpy it and then fill it back up. The concern would always be air pockets when filling it back up but after having watched enough Wheelers Dealers it appears easy enough !!

What oil / coolant are you going to use ? Mine appears to have had Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w 50 the last few times. Coolant - i imagine that any modern coolant would be as good as any recommended in the handbook, the basic engine idea has hardly changed since the biturbo ! I don't want to get into an argument on oil, I would head over to the 3200 section if i wanted that.

Air filters are available from Opie Oils they sell UFi ones for about £15 a pair.

Plugs aren't hard but if the rocker covers are coming of to do belts you may aswell let them do that.

Gear box and rear diff oil is easy.

Grimaldi  - clearly a bit of a drive for you charge £250 for belts

£15 for the air filters from Opie Oils?? Crikey- I can't pass that up...

On the oil front- I remember reading from a couple of sources (and hearing personally from an owner of a new car who patronised McGraths) that the Cup's wanted 10W-60. However, given that we're not racing them (speak for yourself!) I suspect the key thing is the change of oil rather than top-end oil performance...

Yes- the coolant air pocket thing was something that bothered me- I had a new water pump a few years ago and it was mentioned to me then. You know- I bet you could half re-fill the system and then start the car for a moment and then turn off and continue to refill and that might be enough...?

Rocker covers will be coming off but it'll be for the valve clearances. I'm going to get the fuel filter changed as well! Which has not been done in the last 8 years...

I'm not sure what's in it coolant wise- I think that coolant is coolant but I might have to pay for advice...
