Hello from down under!

Recently signed up (yes, after lurking for quite a while) and thought I had better get around to introducing myself and sharing some experiences of life with a Maserati.

As you can see from my signature, I have a beautiful black 2007 GS with nero/bordeaux full leather interior which I bought locally here in Perth, Western Australia.

Just now coming up to the end of warranty with 45,000km on the clock - mostly trouble-free - couple of electrical niggles of no consequence (passenger seat electrics) and the only dramatic event was the a/c compressor cr@pping itself on the freeway - a quiet !pop!, followed by an unnerving cloud of thick black smoke from under the hood together with that acrid stink of burning insulation. I previously had a few problems with the ventilation fan quitting (no joke in our 40+ deg C February heat) and thought maybe the circuit had burnt out (still the first thing that comes to mind with Italian cars!) but when I stopped and checked all seemed ok - no flaming engine bay, no smoking wiring harness, not even a fuse gone - the worst thing was the embarrassment of being at the side of the road in possession of a Maserati with hood up - and yes, the passing Holden/Ford/Japcrap hoons had great fun at my expense!

Can't think of anything else of importance - as many have discovered, the Becker audio head is a bit cranky and tends to switch itself off for a while, especially when playing mp3's on disc or SD card - and every now and again the ecu throws a couple of spurious codes (P0491 and P0492 - secondary air and emission control system). We don't know for sure why this is occurring yet (judging by some forum posts these codes seem quite common) but my tech has taken it (and the Becker issue) up with the factory as a warranty item although the time difference with Modena tends to make these dialogues a bit tedious.  However I did discover that the reason these codes don't go away after a few subsequent starts is because they are related to the emission control system and are therefore 'stickies'. We have updated the engine management software to no avail (Modena keep news of software updates pretty quiet for some reason - it was news to my tech and my car is an 07 build) but the most likely culprit is some fault in the air pump even though this seems to work fine and does what it is supposed to do

What else?  Well lots of stone chips on the front bumper and engine hood - these are pretty much unavoidable here due to dirt blown/carried on to the bitumen and big (dirty) 2-trailer semis (in the metro area) and road trains (even dirtier) with 3 or 4 trailers (outside the metro area). I guess I will get it fixed sometime down the track but no hurry - it will only get chipped again and rust isn't really a problem here. Looks worse than it is due to the black paint but it is non-metallic (nero pastello) so hopefully there will be fewer problems matching.

I just love this car! Silky smooth, refined, rare and luxurious but with a wild beast lurking under those beautiful curves! The perfect combination. And, yes, the F1 gearbox is brilliant, but admittedly the automated clutch can be a bit temperamental around town! Let's face it, Italian cars are from venus and those kraut and pommie cars are definitely from Mars (does that mean Aussie cars are from Uranus?)

So, all in all, a pretty positive report, I guess. Just about due for a new clutch - current (original) one is close to the end of its useful life. Up until now servicing has been relatively cheap - she gets driven regularly (3-4 days a week), a service every 10,000km, rarely sees rain (goes without saying here!) and goes 30+ laps of the track every 3 months

Cheers!

Hi Phra!
Welcome along! I think we have one or two other members from Australia around here proving that Maserati is truely global.
You sound as tho' you are really enjoying your car, and you should too, it sounds a beaut. You need to get thoses problems sorted before the warranty runs out tho'
You must share some pictues with us, particularly with some of that stunning Perth back-drop.
Enjoy.
-David-

Thanks for welcome, guys.

I think there are a few other maseristis from Aus on the forum but mostly (if not all) from eastern states - er, 3500 km away.  Not many other Gransports here in Perth - 3 that I know of and maybe 4 or 5 total? We have a few GTs and QPs turn up to the track days organised by our local dealer (Alf Barbagallo) but none of the other Gransports. Actually considering the small population (about 2 million in Perth and a few dozen more in the rest of the state ) there are a disproportionally large number of exotics floating around. At the last track day we had 2(!) Scuderias, various other Fezzas, 4 Gallardos, an LP640 Murcielago (what a fabulous noise ) and the usual 6 or 8 pesky Lotus Elises (pesky cos they are so bloody quick!).

Our local track (called - you guessed it - Barbagallo Raceway!) is good fun with short 180-200km/hr straights and some nice tricky corners if a little short overall and quite narrow. The Aussie V8 Supercar event (600HP Holden/Ford tanks - every hoon's wet dream) was on the weekend before and they had torn up the track quite badly in a couple of spots so the cones were out to spoil the fun a bit. It was a blisteringly hot 39+ deg C day but no accidents, just one (I think) spin and a minor Lambo engine fire!

I tend to get overtaken a lot - not because the GS is slow, just I'm the one that is slow - too nervous about damaging it, I guess. If I have managed to upload them ok I have included a couple of pics of my GS under pressure from others during a track day last year We have another day on the track coming up this friday.  I will try and get some better pics.

Also - no pics with Perth backdrop - but a pose with Aussie bush background instead!

Cheers,
phra

Hi Rob,

Great write-ups! This thread really deserves it's own special place in the Auto-Journals Section. Please update us regularly with your progress with the black beauty.

Hmmm... that's a question I can't answer with any accuracy at all.  There is only the one dealer here (Alf Barbagallo) so I suppose they would know for sure 'cos they would've sold them all! I know of 3 for sure ('cos I've met the guys) and there were a couple more that were in the showroom but are there no longer and I have noticed a few others around so I guess about 10-12+ all up? Most are sold to order in a custom configuration rather than off the shop floor so it is hard to judge but I recollect the sales manager saying they had a very good year with the GTs and the QPs last year despite the financial woes elsewhere in the world so could be a lot more around...

cheers

Ahh sorry - you are just interested in the GTS...duh
No idea how many but I did see one at the dealer's in late 2008 which had just arrived and they were preparing for delivery - I was there for another reason but we all went to look and admire, attracted by the noise as I remember
So at least 1 GTS here - but not seen since!

cheers

yep - i wouldnt have thought there would be too many S' about.

He's not cheap Mr Barbagallo.

Do you know what the luxury car tax is now - it was something like 33% some years ago.

Hi

Belated response to this one - yes LCT still 33%, kicks in for yr 10/11 @ $57,466 aud UNLESS your vehicle is fuel efficient (ha,ha for exoctics) in which case the threshold lifts to $75,375 (definition of fuel efficient is consumption =<7.0lts /100km)

cheers
