I understand that several significant changes for the UK MOT next year are as follows:
  • Any car built after 1992 that has been decatted WILL fail the MOT irrespective of emission readings.
  • Batteries must be properly secured to vehicle
  • Ball joint gaiters will become part of test in same way as steering bellows - Any split or defect will fail

hope this helps

The "De-catting" of the exhaust system ammendment has been on the cards for a while so I suppose it had to come. I assume it's in response to all the "Max Power" brigade.

Any idea where there is more information on this, would be worth reading up as next years mot could be quite expensive.
Thanks

Other items expected to come in are Warning light defects including Airbag, main beam, CEL / Check engine, turn indicator etc and , Towbar electrics

VOSA's site may have this info but I was briefed by a friend who works for them

hope this helps

No comment on the safety position - but does this mean more visits to our "low cost" garages everytime a light comes on and I nice little fee for resetting!!!!

Does this mean that MOT testers are going to have to be supplied with all relevant EODB code readers for all makes and models of car? Or are they going to remove the dashboard as part of the MOT to check that the faulty ABS or Airbag warning light hasn't just been removed?

Not sure I get your point Feef given that operational warning lights will either briefly illuminate when switching on ignition or when switching on the component.

hope this helps

Say a vehicle came with ABS as an optional extra. There would be no light to illuminate if it wasn't fitted to that car. What's the difference, therefore, between a car with faulty ABS and the light removed, and one that never had it fitted in the first place?

I am not aware of any ABS fitted as a factory option that does not have a warning light. Even if this was the case, VOSA have full details of manufacturers records and testers have access to VOSA. In any event, it is self evident if ABS is fitted by simply looking under the bonnet for the ABS pump/distribution controller. If no ABS is fitted to a car, then it cannot be part of the test.

So no, I still do not get your point as the power on self test will clearly show which warning lights work.

hope this helps

dont worry too much, all these tests are purely that the relevant LIGHT comes on and goes off, not a check of the relevant system. No light = fail, oddly if your abs worked fine but the bulb had gone you would fail as they are only looking for a light! this is a stupid system but I guess for most cars if may provide a adequate test. So anyone worrying remember only your bulb has to go on, then off.
