Currently a 350Z owner but have decided to move on to a 4.2 Cambiocorsa. Been to see this one and waiting for a repair to the door to be able to test drive it as everything superficially seems ok. I test drove a similar model there and really liked the Maserati experience!

http://www.maseratiforum.co.uk/tm.asp?m=44815&forumid=123

However just been reading some of the comments on the dealer and getting a bit worried! I have sought quotes from some inspection companies as that will now be essential, has anyone a suggestion of someone who does a thorough job?

The 350z-uk web community has been excellent and extremely supportive and what I have seen so far on maseratiforum looks to be similar.

Paul

Welcome Paul. If you are buying any Maserati it is wise to have a Pre Purchase Inspection done for sure. If you are buying from a dealer, then you can have those works done by the supplying dealer pre pick-up.

However, if you are buying a car from ADG you would be advised to have the car re-inspected to ensure the listed works have actually been done, prior to collection. As a forum member wrote elsewhere, a PPI on an ADG car is only part of it. If the works needed get done badly or not at all, then what's the point? We seem to be seeing more and more good reports regarding customer service for Auto-Sportiva, who are only down the road from ADG. So why not give them a call too.

If you like the look of the ADG car, and the PPI is okay then go for it - but please do get the car re-inspected prior to collection from a neutral 3rd party such as the RAC (not the best, but better than nothing) or ideally a Maserati Indy, but not the garage next door to ADG. Hint, hint.  Oh, and before you get the car PPI'd with ADG tell them you would like to have them put the car on the ramp when your man comes to inspect the car, and then put back on the ramp again when the works have been done later on. If they refuse this request, walk away.

Autoficcina are an Maserati Indy based in Surrey, ask them if they could check the car for you, as they will know the 4200 inside out. A few hundred quid may be pricey short term but long term it could save you thousands.

Good luck chap, and we look forward to seeing you around here soon with something Italian!

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum

You would be well advised  to seriously heed all the comments made by tbody, especially after recent events    they now seem to have  created   a history of promising the earth pre sale ,   but once the deal is done , Arthur Daley steps in to take care of the non existant after sales  SO BE WARNED    if you are that smitten with the car , price your inspection accordingly  for two visits  ,  a pre collection/delivery  inspection   once All the work has completed   DONT rely on them promising to fix stuff once its in your ownership ,

Most other Dealers of this marque tend to stand by there words , so please dont take this a general rule of thumb    but do get all cars independantly inspected at least once

Do your homework on here    using the search facility, any other questions feel free to ask   there's a wealth of experience  to be tapped

regards loz

Move on buddy, there are plenty of decent 4200's for sale. I would not recommend this dealer under any circumstances. I have been there and done it. I would not like anyone else to go through what I did. Do a search on this forum.

It's all been said.
If you like the car so much, get the inspection done.
If anything crops up, make sure the dealer does the work picked up on inspection ...check once, twice and thrice!!!!
Make sure it is done well too.

We have to be fair, but most importantly be fair to yourself and don't rush into something you could regret.

'caution' is your bye-word.

Thanks for the quick responses - plenty of food for thought there!! The car does tick the boxes I chose and there is a warranty offered as part of the deal (Autoprotect) but from other's experiences I've surfed it appears to be pretty useless.

If I do continue with the process the key now is a decent inspection, I've had a quote of £295 from these people http://carinspections.co.uk/ but would prefer to go with someone recommended as having decent experience inspecting this model.
Any recommendations?

YH,
I used RAC at around the same price.
They were fine but not specialists in performance cars.
They did pick up everything of note but have a wait for other recommendations from forum members too.

The Warranty you are offered is pretty basic, when I tried to claim I didn't 'tick any of the right boxes' so was refused.
I actually wonder what I would have had to have wrong to make a claim - crankshaft through the roof I guess; and even then I would have to make the claim before fixing!

Others have been more forthright about this dealer and I am being circumspect, but I personally wouldn't go there again!

If going for an inspection I would use one who has a SD2-3 at least that way you will also know if the clutch [1-1.5k to replace] has any life left in it.

If this dealer is trying to sell a car with known defects...ie the door, what else is wrong with it? Would it not have been better to have the car as close to 100% prior to selling or were they hpoing you would not notice!

Hi Peter

Forgive my ignorance - what is an SD2-3?

The door was ok when the car was listed on their website but was damaged when someone subsequently reversed into it on the forecourt - I've seen the damage and it was fairly minor. The clutch was replaced approx 4k miles ago and the interior/exterior colour combination is right which is why I will go ahead with an inspection. However, given the misgivings on the forum I want to make sure that is accurate as it can be.

Paul , sd2/3  is the plug in diagnostic software/hardware particular to maserati/ferrari   obviously checks all error codes etc and   it can give a reasonable  measurement of the amount of clutch life remaining , plus electronically adjust  clutch/gearchange parameters  ,   4k miles  with a bad driver can best part  annihalate  a clutch  tho normal use should see up to 20k miles clutch life ,   You can ask for a print out as proof of the % left which is time and date marked

regards loz

Thanks Loz - I will ask the dealer to provide that ready for the inspection, particularly as they have Giallo next door!

As Loz says...just make sure the print out relates to your car!

Also make sure that the service book is not too new and crisp. i.e. that it is the origional.

Kind of makes me laugh now, but the dealer told me that he thaught the previous owner was a lord! I since found that this was absolute bollocks, not that a lord owning a car would make it better anyway. I now suspect the previous owner of my car was probably killed in the crash that my car had had! So the previous owner was probably an angel.

Also, ask direct and closed questions, don't accept don't know, or I don't think so, make sure they have done their homework.

if you ask it's it's been involved in an accident and they say no, and you then find out it has, you have an element of comeback.

I know in the past I've harped on about the sale of goods act, but you should read it before buying, you would be surprised on what you are legally entitled to.

ask all the questions, don't be afraid to get them written down, I trade emails with the dealership that way it's a record of what you agreed.

it never ceases to amaze me how many people don't know their rights when buying second hand goods, particularly cars!

for example... how worn is the clutch, oh only 30%, that's good, then it goes a week later and you find it's 80%, if you have it documented then you have legal comeback!

only my tuppence worth...

Welcome Paul

if our site helps - register - search Maserati in your chosen area and up will pop all the speciailists and franchises, zoom out and you can see the whole of the UK network - take your pick, most dealers will do a ppi for you. It's a good place to start to get to know who you would like to service your pride and joy on purchase too.

Good Luck with the new car
