Hi All,
I'm ready now to take the plunge on a middle aged, tempramental Italian exotic :) I'm just looking for some advice as to how to go about negotiating the best price, I hope there is some flexibility in the price or the amount of warranty I can get.

Basically, I'll be trading in an 2005/04 Phaeton 3.0 V6, I've been offered 11k and need 12k to settle the outstanding.

The dealer has several cars, both 3200 and 4200. I'm a fan of the 3200's styling but the car will be covering 10k pa so I'm leaning towards the practicality of the 4200. I also prefer one of the 4200's colour combination. I'm going to have to demand a 24 month warranty regardless fo cost. Screenshots would help:
My preferred car, but also the most expensive

2003, 52k, £18k

Love the idea of TT, love the colour combination... Seems expensive compared to the one above, and finance will be harder to obtain.

2000, 56k, £15k

Very cheap, not keen on the colour, but the price makes it interesting. It looks a little... tired?

2000, 49k, £12k

Would you stump up the extra cash for the 4200? How much room do you think he has to move? Ideally would pay the asking price if they'll match the settlement on the Phaeton and throw in a longer warranty.

Xeno,

It will always be down to personal preference…is it the twin turbos and nice rear lights, or improved dynamics and a CC box???????

Take some time to read on here about both cars as, although they look the same they two different cars.

The 3200 seems to be the more fragile of the two and as you state they are getting older now. I would not recommend buying one that looks tired as they are very expensive to maintain as all parts need to be up to super car specs. Rust can be a problem on the rear of the 3200 [wheel arc, below rear lights and boot lid]. Manuals sufferer from End Float and throttle body problems

The 4200 is not without its faults. F1 pumps are known to fail but rust and reliability are better. Interior is better put together and these are what finally sold me on my 4200.

Buy the best you can get, better to spend an extra couple of grand for a well sorted car than save now and pay later. A good 3200 will be more than a fair 4200 and I guess in time more collectable.

Full service history a must, STRONGLY advice an inspection and remember it’s a buyers market, even if you won't get a good price for your VW.

Given the mileage you intend to do the middle 3200 has a £2500 service within a year to replace the cam chains, and view that as a minimum.

The 4200 is quite leggy for the year but assuming it has FSH this should be a good thing - is it immaculate?  I'd expect it to be for the money in this climate, the red one which sold on here for less was a minter by all accounts.

Probably a more sensible daily user purchase than a 3200 although I have to say I'd miss the boost.  I bought my 3200 on 53k and did similar mileage to you, it never let me down but the wear and tear bill was chunky.  4200s are now getting to the age where wear and tear items will crop up irrespective of mileage, it will be interesting to see how they fare compared to 3200's, and whether the supposed improvement in build quality stacks up.  I was highly impressed by the way my 3200 held together.

Oh and beware the warranty company the dealer chooses.  The cash it costs might be better on deposit just in case.

Would go for a 4200 over the 3200 as more robust and reliable. Spend as much as you can and get the best possible with FULL maserati history. Just noticed that my old car for sale on this site so that might be worth looking at.

Thanks for the referal mate.
You have email Xeno.
Just come back from a drive in the 4200. It is superb, but although she loves it, does not think it is the car to put 20,000 miles a year in, due to job change.
If I didn't need a family wagon, then I would keep it for me.

Hi Neil.

Stunning car, but it's going to be a fair bit too rich for me at the moment!

I wish! 18k is a bit of a stretch! I'm having an early middle life crisis.

Xeno,

I have never driven a 3200 but always wanted one as I think it's the better looking car (JUST!). You soon get used to the rear lights on the 4200 and realise it's still better looking than most cars out there... It seems somehow more grown up perhaps without the bonnet louvres and so on too.

As to turbos vs atmospheric, the 4200 is very 'cammy' almost feels like a Honda VTEC with the change at around 4000rpm - what a shove you get from that as the power comes in! And with revs over 7000rpm you can tell it's Ferrari's engine. With a Larini exhaust fitted I have owned no better sounding car :)

Mine's an 02 GT with just over 60k on the clock, just had a full service at Emblem and just needed consumables changed out (still pricey but nothing mechanicaly wrong). 6 service stamps makes for a lot of dealer/specialist time, and with an immaculate interior I know it's mainly been long journeys.

As to collectability, I don't think the 3200s mechanically will stand the test of time. The 4200 has the advantage of being the Maserati Ferrari built. F430's engine, 550 Maranello's gearbox are a tempting combo for much less than 20k.

To be honest, not sure I would have buy either for 10-20k mileage, that's a lot of consumables and servicing. I bought a leggy car as I know I will only do 3-5k a year. Suddenly it's not leggy after a while :)

He's down to 17k on the car (which is fine), but I'm looking for another grand on my car. Strangely enough, he hasn't called since Thursday... guess he's playing hardball.

You managed to get the finance then??
Mine has now gone, for a giveaway price, but it has gone to a good home.
Enjoy.

Yeah, they wouldn't entertain a private seller though, and yours was newer and thus a bit out of my price range!
