Hi Guys,

I'm not yet a Maserati driver but its on my to do list for 2006. I'll be looking for a second hand, or 'previously loved' coupe, either a late 3200 or an early 4200.

But maybe you can explain: why does a whole extra litre of engine only produce 20 or so extra horses? Seems like a lot more fuel is burned to not much effect.

It looks like there are a lot more gadgets in a 4200 (the newer centre consol is awesome) but what else do I get for my money?

Cheers,

Aqua

Aqua,

The 3200 has a turbo, and the 4200 is normally aspirated. I guess that explains most of the difference.

I have neither myself, but I'm sure Gavin and Malcolm will fill you in on the details of the two cars.

Cheers

Hi Aqua

Roger is absolutely right. To be honest there is not a huge difference between the two except the most obvious visually; boomerang brake lights and the two turbo intakes on the front engine bonnet.

Interior may have improved in the 4200 however not to a point that I would change or would had bought a 4200. I prefer the 3200 because of its looks, turbo kiciking in sounds and especially the brake lights.

It is all down to personal taste, but let me make one crucuial point which I discovered and please don't quote me on this. The Auto box in the 3200 is a genuine Ferrari 456 GTA latest gearbox. Whereas the manual in the 3200 is BMW and 4200 Autos/Manuals. The Ferrari one can handle horsepower well in excess of 460 BHP but BMW is much less. I myself have the auto and love the way is kicks down when required especially in sports mode. This will improve further when I have my tubis fitted soon  raising power to or over 400BHP!!!

Have fun looking and test driving etc. Try out both 3200s and 4200s and each of the Manuals/Autos/Paddles.

If you really want the best all rounder then consider the GransSport. I have been tempted with this model but hate the rear lights and worried that I will miss the unique sounds of the turbos!

Good luck in your hunting.

Hi Folks

How is everyone? been a bit hectic recently so sorry about the long silence!!

Anyway to the point in discussion the cars are quite different and yet not so........

The 3200 with its boomerang lights was seen to be a real design winner and the twin turbo engine delivers good power and torque and being twin turbo a nice follow on from the "turbo era" cars

The 4200 is a very similar looking car ( I have the spyder so a little different in performance) the 4200 engine has a wider bore 92mm instead of 80mm but the stroke is the same. The 3200 has a compression ratio of 8:1 (lower because of the turbos) and the 4200 11.1:1

The best advice is to drive both models and there are several 4200 models to chose from. I have the Cambiocorsa / paddle shift gearbox which I love when driving but have to be honest and say that pulling away is probably not as sharp / crisp as a conventional clutch

I understand that the main reason for the rear light cluster change was to satisfy the American saftey regulations and therefore international markets at large.

If you really want to get techy then the 4200 engine is lower shorter and 20kilos lighter all that and the weight of the turbos etc off the front axle should make for better handling if your name is Schumacher or button. bothe deliver max torque at 4500 revs 333nm in the case of the 4200 I am not sure what the 3200 delivers.

This can go on for a very long time...the 4200 has a torque tube transmission with the gearbox on the back axle with the diff. Again this gives better weight distribution and better handling. The 4200 has a twin plate clutch over a single in the 3200.

The 4200 has the skyhook suspsion system which is just incredible

Its all very academic the 3200 coupe weighs 1590 kilos the 4200 cc coupe 1680 kg and the spyder is heavier at 1730kg so power to weight is probably better in the 3200 but the power delivery is smoother and faster in the 4200.

Generally displacement engines provide a smoother delivery and less time delay in response.

They are both absolutely fantastic cars people seem to make their choice of preference based on the looks of the back end.

If you are going to buy a Maser don't even think about fuel consumption it is not what these kind of cars are about!

Chose either this is a no lose situation!

Hope that helps!
