Hi all,

As my insurance is up for renewal in 6 weeks or so I thought I'd be a tadge proactive and get some idea of the ££££s before the event . . . anyway, cut a long story short the little red phone people are coming in at about £500 less than last years premium  - as long as I have an approved tracker.

Apparently this is because most cars are now stolen using the proper keys (burglars/physical threats).

Apart from the seemingly obvious fact that I paid too much last year, has anyone had a tracker fitted recently and is it as cost effective as it appears -  I think that besides fitting cost there is an annual premium to pay.

cheers in advance if anyone can help/advise

Col

I've got NavTrack fitted to mine, and it turned out to be responsible for 5 beeps which sound like they're coming from the parcel shelf area shortly after start-up. If that sounds familiar it could be a clue.

If so, the car should have come with a couple of credit card sized fobs. (If the car's moved without one being with it they give you a call.) If you don't have those I don't know what you do next.

Could be worth calling NavTrack as the most obvious choice anyway and seeing if they have your number plate on record. Sorry, don't have the number to hand but I'll post it if I come across it.

when I started buying these cars' it was mandatory from my insurance co to have a tracker fitted and evidence that it was active. if you have Navtrak ADR, then you get the fob's with the car (generally 2) but can order more and they can programme them remotely. the subscription can be changed from car to car very easily.

The system does work with very few false alarms, occasionally mine goes off if the fob is in the boot.

Mine is fitted but unactivated only cost £50 more to insure
Against the cost of Annual tracker cost

I phoned up Navtrak today, who now call themselves Cobra, to find out the cost of activating my tracker.  They want £30 activation fee, and £295 p.a.  The credit card shaped card things are £20 each if you need more of those.

Interestingly they also said that the previous owner of my car phoned them in Dec 08,  to say that the car has been scrapped!  Very worrying.  I am not really sure what to do about that!  Although Cobra said it could be an error!

I decided to reactivate my tracker retrive - cost £29 to register in my name and then £122 sub. Problem is that when I asked them to test it, they cannot get a reply, yet (retesting it now). It may be that the car battery was removed and so has flattened the internal battery.

So I may have to get a tracker engineer to sort it - £79! Or they have a deal for existing customers.... I can pay £99 and get an upgraded tracker for free, the £99 is for fitting. Feel a little anoyed as I could have saved this hastle and got a new one fitted straight away for this price!

This happened to anyone else???

I must say, I think a tracker is much more than reducing insurance, its peace of mind and security - IMO.

Im betwixt on this re trackers , one side thinks they are a good thing possible deterrent, but they dont stop the car from being stolen , but enable the car to be found , quite quickly after its been reported stolen ,

Now i expect your like me and watch the endless , Road wars /night cops programmes  and i think to myself  would i really want my car back after its been

(a) damaged whilst being broken into
(b) Driven by a madman on a joyride to see how fast it goes
(c) Having to clean all the finger print dust/grease from inside an out  and having to pay the police arranged tow truck to redeliver the car to your home address

I think not    come to the conclusion i wouldn't want it back after it had been abused  would rather start again with a new car

jmho   regards loz

I also love those programmes Loz!

To be honest though, our type of car would be nicked to be sold, not always to be wragged to buggery by some chav - they tend to go for Corsa for this! I'm sure ours would be a little harder to steal than say an Escort, so not an easy option for said Chav thief!

certain trackers tell you when the car has moved without the ignition having been turned on, therefore in the middle of the night you get a call and the car gets found quickly. Really good if it happens.

After 20+ years dealing with criminals [no not MP's] I can asure you the only reason they take crappy cars is the ease of taking due to poor security systems and oportunity close to home. If the chance was there to take a Maserati they would not think for a moment about a tracker etc or getting caught...if they did they would not take it.

So I'm with Loz on this one...if it goes you don't want it back even if repaired, it will be regestered as stolen recovered, it will have been thrashed from start up to end game and if it is stolen to order it wil be in a container at a port in hours.

I know what you both mean, perhaps Ive been caught up in the moment of having a new motor and wanting to protect it. Oh well, maybe next year I'll not renew it!

I agree like, if it was nicked, would want the cash to go and buy a new one!!
