Does anyone have any experience of expert classic car valuations for insurance purposes.  Watching the magazines ads and internet I think (hope) my Ghibli may have increased somewhat since I bought it and wonder about increasing my coverage.

I appreciate there are a lot of chancers out there with some dealers demanding anywhere upto £100k which in my opinion is still unrealistic, even for the very best (like that £43k Merak at Meridien I've seen in another post).

Ideas on cost of valuations or contacts you may have would be helpful.  I'm based in Yorkshire but can travel any reasonable distance if necessary.

Cheers.

Ghibli mate? Nah they ain't worth much these days, I'll give you 2g to get it out of your way...........

Failing that it would probably be worth talking to someone like Bill McGrath who, if not willing to value, might know a marque expert that will. It may also be worth asking your insurance company who they recognise as qualified valuers (some will recognise official clubs).

Ghiblis, Meraks & Boras....alll worth what just one buyer is prepared to pay...if they are sorted and you have time they will fetch a price but many go for less than the performance compared to similar aged cars suggest they are worth....not really an investment...hand on heart what do you think you could replace it for and will the insurer agree. watch the auctions and some sorted cars do go fetch good prices and other don't. to get a good price they msu be truly good otherwise they don't fetch the cost of the restoration!

An investment of the heart not the head!

Me............. if I had the dosh I would have a 3500, Ghibli spyder, and Merak to join the Ghibli bi turbo and 4200 spyder,,,,Alas!

the insurance should cover how much you would want to replace your car with an equivalent one if you lost it for some reason... not how much you could sell your car from. so the insured value doesn't have to be the market value... if you've modded your car then you may want to pay extra insurance to cover the cost of the mods.

for reference, i've had my ghibli II valued a couple of times in the netherlands... it typically costs EUR 100-150. there's no point getting it valued unless the insurance company trusts the valuer, so get a list of authorised valuers from the insurance company. a good valuer will do some homework before he comes to see your car to get a feel for market values and what to look for.

the two valuations i've had were pretty close to the mark in terms of what i thought the value of the car was.

hope this helps?

regards...

Hi Phil,  yeah I've seen this one and it's probably a much more sensible price for a pristine right hand drive model.  I believe it is the same car that Classic Cars magazine tested some time back.  In that article they were bigging up the prices with talk of £100k and then it comes up for sale at £60k.

Mine's got perfect restored bodywork with an engine and bay best described as original (i.e. a bit oily) runs great though, stills pulls and easy 140 but I've never tried to 'max' it.

It's a left hooker with around 58k on the clock, I ran it all through last year and she just sailed through it's MOT last weekend.  I reckon on about £40-45k for insurance purposes but hey...who really knows.  In a couple of months your 2g might sound awfully tempting.

..........Series 1 Sebring and/or Vignale Spider for me.  Saw a beautiful green metallic one at last years Techno Classica and fell in love.

Not an orginal Maserati colour I'm afraid:  It started out life in Switzerland in 'Celeste Chiaro' (metallic sky blue).  This is an Audi Zermatt Silver Y7Y as chosen by the previous owner.  When I had the bodywork restored I stuck with it, I think it really suits the car.  It is pretty close to the modern Maserati colour Grigio Nuvolari that I had on a quattroporte a couple of years back.  That has a faint undertone of bronze and looks incredible whereas this Zermatt silver is a bit more old fashioned looking, less metallic.

The avitar has been 'enhanced in post production' as the TV marketing people are fond of saying.  here is a pic from last years Auto Italia show at Gaydon, taken by Octane magazine.  Better than any of my efforts and shows a truer colour.

Have you posted pics of your Indy?  Love to see 'em.

Coops.

Sound advice Jonny, Thanks.  If the cost of a valuation is similar here in the UK then that's not too extortionate, even for a Yorkshireman.

And thanks everyone for the feedback.  I can probably glean sufficient info from these posts to make a more informed decision about what to do next while keeping my feet on the ground regarding over-hyped values.
Maybe I'll sit tight for a while and wait for things to settle down in the market.

Cheers.
