Hi there , its my first post and is a mix of happy & sad ..! Happy that I have a wonderful Maserati 4200GT , love the growl , the styling , the flare and all that the Maserati badge delivers . Sad that my first experience of a Maserati dealer ( based in sevenoaks a.d.g. ) has been tainted . My plan was discussed at length with them that I would like to start with a 4200GT to see if I & the wife could get on with it as used to boring mercedes etc , but if all ok would very quickly want to upgrade to say either Gransport or Granturismo . So I bought the 4200GT for £ 17k and told them to keep look out for a Grandsport for circa £ 25k .... after few weeks of getting used to the 4200GT , I saw they had dropped the price of a Grandsport to £ 29k .. liitle bit too much , but hey you only live once. I called them back to say , I might take the plunge and go to £ 29k , great they said , we will give you £ 12k back for yours ....!!!!!!!!!! Thats £ 5k less than I paid only 4 weeks ago ... I then get a long story about profit in their stock , cost of sale , prep work , etc etc etc . So I say surely good businessman would structure a deal to build a relationship with new customer that would eventually end up in them spending circa £ 55k on a granturismo etc ..? He then went on to say that even if he had never met me and my car was for sale on eBay and I was off to Oz .. he would still only give me £ 12k for the 4200GT ... !! I have never seen such poor business acumen and someone try to pull wool over my eyes so blatantly !! I have since struck a deal with a far far better Maserati dealer , who has never seen me before and I have purchased a £ 54k grandturismo :-) Just thought I would share my experience with everyone , hope you dont mind PAUL

I have no direct experience of ADG, and know that there have been issues as noted above, but purely in regard to your case…..to my mind a dealer is under no obligation to buy a car back from you – the price he offers will depend on a whole range of considerations, only one of which will be (or might be) building a relationship with a new customer – will also include for example what his stock levels are and how easily he thinks he’ll resell the traded-in car. So, not sure that a low offer makes him a joker lacking in business accumen per se (there may be other things that do...I don't know!).

Whilst frustrating that he made you a low offer, you’re clearly under no obligation to accept it. Based on the prices sought, the 4200GT is not as desireable as the CC and the prices are low...a couple in the classifieds at around £11k for early ones. Yours looks to be similar - a 2002 or 2003 model, so a £12k trade offer might not be miles off to be honest.

Anyway....whatever the experience, it sounds like the outcome was that you got the car you wanted (albeit more than twice your budget!) from a dealership that you were happier with. Hope you enjoy your new car - nice choice!

Hi nigw thanks for your reply ... my car is a 4200 Coupe Cambiocorsa , is that what you meant by CC .sorry ? ADG had only 2 in stock at time and were advertising on PH for stock too. My point is that we had discussed that I would quickly upgrade to GSport & then Gturismo . Also my point is that if I were building a relationship with new client and wanted to retain them for future business I would look at the deal over a 12 months period . Adg would have made say 3k profit clear on 4200 then if they had given me say 15k back against a Gsport with 3 k profit they sold the 4200 again for say 17k , again 2k profit they would surley have made 3k + 3k + 2k = £ 8k ............... then maybe 6k on a Gturismo early next year so total circa £ 14k profit from one happy new client .............. whereas they have made 3k .... and P'd me off ....so 14k v 3k ....... good business acumen ?/?? what would dragons den say ??

Hi, sorry - you said 4200GT which is taken to mean the manual. Yes, CC = cambiocorsa and these are generally more desirable.   Probably not much point me commenting on your sums in the absence of actually knowing what their margins were on each car, or what their other considerations would have been.

Probably no point getting upset about it though! There have been worse stories, as intimiated above!

Hi Paul,

Think I spoke to you at the dealers when you were picking the car up...I sold my 4200 with 71k on the clock for not much over what they are offering you, but it was a revised late 2003 version [04 model year]

Best of luck with the purchase.

Pete

Hello Peter I have been trying to track you down as would like to get involved with the Maserati tours you do as we discussed ; please let me know and best way to keep in contact . Re ADG , Bill the elderly chap is really nice , but only doing what he is told by the boss . It too him 7 days to call me back as he said he couldn't get hold of the boss either of them ...! My disappointment and slight astonishment is the way the " Boss " tried to tell me that the difference between £ 17 k and £12k is not £ 5k !! ......... was when I was at school Then told me he would only give me the same 12k back for mine whether I was a good customers or someone he had never met , didnt know , never bought a car and was emigrating to Oz ... is that a switched on comment ..? Maybe its just me , but I have 4 businesses and I would never speak to a customer like that , let alone one who had openly discussed spending circa £ 75k + over next 6 - 12 months If I was a betting man , I would say there is something not right at ADG , either a management problems , financial issues or something else .... time will tell , but you read it here first Anyway , their loss , I will be spending my £ 75k elsewhere Look forward to hearing back and meeting again in due course All the best Yours S&F PAUL

I can sympathise.

When I was looking for a GS, they gave me a PX offer on my then car which was below what I was offered on We Buy Any Car. I know they have to make a living, which I accept, but my car was close to retail condition - I'd had wheels done not 3 months before, leather had been fed and coloured etc - the guy who bought it off me for c30% more than the PX price offered was over the moon with the condition and thought he'd had a superb price - it was still 15% less than main agent cars.  I accept I'm a little biased, but the car was spotless!

They had the same type of car out the front, 2 years older with 40% more miles for more than they offered for mine as PX.

I'm happy with people making a living, but if I'm treated like an uneducated fool, I'll take my business elsewhere.

As for the offer on your car after 4 weeks, there are certainly costs to be considered and the value will have changed (not least the car will have one more owner!), but if it was a PX, I'm surprised they didnt have the foresight to work with you.

BUT....they must be doing something right!  They're still one of the biggest dealers in 4200 and GS models and continue to get some good looking stock.
