Hi,

I have a 4200 CC (late 2003) with Xenon headlights. The yellow side-lights kind of let it down a little, has anyone changed the standard sight-light bulbs to LED’s, or is this even possible?

Also, out of interest, are any of the rear bulbs (lights, brakes etc) LED?

I'm booking mine into Emblem shortly as have a list of minor items for them to resolve, just wondering if it was worth adding this to the list...

Thanks
C

Craig.
I did the same with side-lights, high beam and front fog lamps. They are a swine to get to, so I thought I may as well change the lot while I was at it! Went for the xenon look bulbs and they are much closer to the dip beam now and very pleased with the result and the better quality output.
I went for upgraded standard bulbs not LED's as I don;t know how the cars system would react to LED's as they often throw up a warning light due to the low current the LEDs draw.
I changed the indicator bulbs in the rear light clusters to the mirror coated ones so that the orange of the standard bulb doesn't show. I know, I really should get out more!
My file is at home, but if you (or anyone else for that matter) are interested in what I used, I will post up here when I have had a look.

Hi David,

I should have guessed that you would have already made this mod :)

If you could detail the bulbs then that would be great - I'll also see what Emblem come back with.

P.S how do you change the trip computer from KPH to MPH??

Switch on the info centre and select "Main" menu by pushing the Main button once. Push the right hand large round button and then scroll down the menu that appears to "Configur" and then select units, should be the first highlighted option, of miles or KM by pushing the right hand button again. Press ESC until you return to the "Main" screen once again.
That should do it.

The bulbs I used to modify the lights came from autobulbsdirect.co.uk

Front high beam (BLB448X) H1 ABD Xenon extreme white £9.99 pair
Front fog light (BLBH9X) H9 65w ABD Xenon extreme white £17.95 pair
Front side lights (OSH5W) 501 W5W Osram Halogen Cool Blue £12.02 pair
Rear indicators (ABD581SLV0) 581 Silver Indicators £8.80 pair

It's difficult to photo the front but the high beam and fog are certainly a lot whiter than standard and the side lights are much better but not as "blue" as you can get with a LED. I believe you can get LEDs made for canbus systems which contain something to fool the computer, but I couldn't say if they would work with our cars but they do work on Volvos!

The rear light clusters are much improved visually and you can see quite clearly.

I have LED sidelight bulbs in the Range Rover for the same reason, the yellow tinge to the side lights didn't look right next to the HID headlights. I bought a set of them on Ebay with the resistors built in so it doesn't trigger the bulb warning. If you buy some, I can recommend these..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/8-LED-Side-Light-Bulb-W5W-T10-501-canbus-resistor-Xenon_W0QQitemZ180477778828QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item2a05505b8c

That is if the 4200's use the 501 capless sidelight bulbs.

Yes, those 501's should fit. It's the Italian electrical system that worries me!! The fact that I don't want to pull the car apart again to replace the bulbs for a very long time is the main reason why I stuck with tinited standard bulbs.

Hi David,

I have bought the bulbs that you have stated and I am having difficulty in working around fitting them. Can you tell me how exactly you managed to get to the sidelights and fog lights to replace the bulbs i have managed to change the indicators and may just be able to change the mains as soon as the bulbs arrive. The only way i can see to get to them all is to remove the whole headlight unit which i would rather not do if possible.

To replace the front side lights, indicators and fog lamp bulbs, you need to remove the light unit that is below your headlamps.
First off you will need to remove the road wheel and then remove the wheel arch liner from the front of the wheel arch.
With that out of the way, from under the front of the bumper, look straight up at the back of the lamp unit and you will see a silver coloured (10mm I think) bolt, undo this. Then push the light unit from behind and it will unclip itself and come forward out of the bumper. Unclip the three connectors and withdraw the lamp unit completly, you can then change over the bulbs. Fitting is just the reverse process. Repeat of the other side!
Probably took me 30 minutes per side to do once I figured out how it all came apart!

Here is the diagram of the front reproduced courtesy of Eurospares.co.uk

The lamp unit is No4 and the bolt I am referring to, to remove is shown is No5.

And the wheel arch liners, again courtesy of Eurospares.co.uk:

You need to remove No48 and No30

While you are in the nearside arch, you will find the airbox, take out the 4 screws (becareful as they rust solid sometimes!!) and you can check on the air filter

I hope this helps with the changing of these bulbs on the front.
The rear light clusters are way easier!

Far easier to Jack the car up at the front , In the front Plastic undershield are two 1" holes roughly inline with either side of the radiator,  with the use of a torch you will see the lamp fixing bolt about 4" in ,   with a 10mm socket and 10" extension   remove said bolt , prize out lamp with something soft ( personally i mask around the lamp area where it meets the bumper paint work) for protection, as a rule i   change all the  the bulbs takes around 5 mins each side when you know how its done   or your doing it for a 2nd time

Hope this helps regards loz

Hi,

I Changed all the bulbs last night sucessfully. The main beams were a pain to get too, but managed it in the end.

I also put in LED's in the side lights which look very good, Its a shame that the Fog lights ((BLB448X) H1 ABD Xenon extreme white) look a little yellow in comparison, I may look into possible LED's when i'm ready to take it all apart again.

One thing to note,
On the 2002 Spyder there are no holes in the undertray to access the side light fixing bolt so i had to remove the whole tray which is a pain as it is secured by about 12 bolts underneath and 3 screws each side in the wheel arches.

The LED's were bought on Ebay.
8 LED Side Light Bulb W5W T10 501 no canbus error.

After some very interesting reading about upgrading the front bulbs to a 'white' xenon / LED look, I took the plunge and ordered the Side, Fog and High beam bulb set from Autobulbsdirect as suggested. My 05 4200 facelift has Xenon headlights. All went pretty well with the side lights and Fogs taking the light unit out as described, although to access the light unit locking nut I had to remove the front undertray for access - no problem though gave everything a clean and grease. However the High beam has caused some major problems. The driver side went ok by removing the wheel and then gaining access through the liner access flap removing the locking cap and then the bulb. The passenger 'near side' seems to be a nightmare. There is no way of accessing the locking cap because of the air inlet pipework from the filter, either from the engine bay or the wheel liner flap... can anyone help or have the proceedure to do this... thanks...
