I have fallen in love with the 3200 GT.

However, I need some pointers on how do I go about buying a reliable(-ish) car.

Do I select a car and ask an independent garage to verify it before I buy it?

What is the best place to look on prices?

Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Paul, where is the car and where are you?

The 3200 is a great car, but if you get a bad one it will cost you your limbs...get the inspection, as £300 spent now could save you £3,000+ in a few months

I suspect this one has hung around a bit because of the interior colour, but if you like it (plus it probably looks better in the flesh) then that does look like a nice one - belts and chains done, red key present, FSH etc. I'd suggest an inspection as safrane says though, and with 4 nmonths MOT left I'd ask for a new one before sale.

Safrane - What do you mean by 3000+. What should I be aware of and who do you recommend for the inspection?

Are Grimaldi Engineering any good?

Many thanks

Hi Paul,   What Safrane means is that  by paying £2-300  before  you buy  for a good  independant inspection      could  discover imminent  or costly potential problems ,      by discovering them now  before you buy   enables you to a  walk away from a potential disaster or or at the very least re- negotiate the asking price , no one can argue with an unbiased independant report ,

Roberto of Grimaldi engineering  is one of The Best  indies around ,  his knowledge is unsurpassed  with these cars ,  and  real easy going     good guy  to deal with , if you were to use him to further look after the car   you would never be disappointed    no  shocking surprise bills   its all up front with him   you almost get the feeling  he's on your side , He  has superb facilities and you'll always have a good selection of massers fezza's and Lambo's if you decide to wait whilst your work is being done , with the added bonus that the main suppliers to these cars Eurospares.co.uk is only 50 yds away   well worth a quick visit

Seems the all important 68k service was done to include cam belts and CHAINS  this was the expensive one out the way ,   so you should have a few years without major expense   providing the rest of the car checks out

regards loz

Well as Loz says, its soooo easy to find a few bills that soon top up to £3,000+, Adjustable suspension problems, Throttle Body problems, End Float, new Disks and Pads...at least the chains have been done [but check against reciept] as that is £1k+ alone.

Car looks nice in the photos, but have a look at the post re items to look for...its almost a decade old with 68k on the clock so it will have some use marks but do not be put off too much re miles as they do not like to be left sat in a garage growing old.

There are some areas that rust, rear arches, under the rear lights and where the bumper meets the body due to rubbing. I wouls have had a 3200 but found so may 'dogs' I ended up with a 4200. Howver if you get a good-en there is nothing to beat it.

Best of luck

It's 82k miles, not 68k! There are a few mnore pics on pistonheads.

Just a footnote! The car you are looking at is 2/3rds the price of a low mileage excellent example. It could be a bargain even with the miles and possible unpopular colour combo. All I would say is check out a few before deciding.

Hi Pauldas

I bought a 3200GTA at a pretty decent price over a year ago now, and although I knew it might cost to put all the issues right it has not been as painful as I at first thought.

I have had a list of problems with it but luckily, none of them were in the crazy money area, and there are a few bits of this car that are really expensive to fix, so you need to keep this in mind when buying. It is worth a quick browse on the Eurospares web site as they list the prices there and you can see what the parts cost. I have now got through my second MOT with the car and my repair bills have been in the £2.5k region for the year, and my car i suspect would be one of the dogs referred to earlier (no any more I should add!!!) as i had electrical problems, damage to the front radiator bracket, leaking steering, flakey throttle body, and seized brakes and no red key, all sorted now.

So even if its got a few issues it might not be the end of the world. and I like you fell in love with these cars, and have no regrets buying it its a fantastic car and worth the effort time and money, and I plan to keep mine for as long as I can.

Good luck!!!

Well it looks like the plan is coming together and I will be picking up my 3200 next week pending no disater when Roberto (what a nice chap) checks over the car.

What I needed some help on is what do I need in my kitbag for when I bring the baby home? Like oil etc etc.

And where is the best place to get insured?

Also the car does not come with a spare wheel, just a pump to get me home - is that normal?

All comments are gratefully received

Many thanks

For insurance try Ben at Michael Ward. They're a forum sponsor.

The spare tyre was an option!!! at about £1k, so it is normal to have a can of foam.

Hi Paul , great that things are coming together , be sure to mention to Rob that the forum initiated the pre check  it will do us all good , as i said previously  he will see you right honestly  and without bias, and   the report a good bargaining tool,

Re the insurance side of things  Aplan  do seem to be coming  up with the best quotes at present  along with Adrian Flux a close second , unfortunately M Ward the sponsor  didn't get close  for me  and im one of the oldest farts on here,   so who knows how these things work        but do  notice i said one of .......      not the oldest

regards loz
