I was always a massive fan of the Chapman era Lotus F1 cars, particularly in the JPS livery. Chapman, despite always recieving mixed reports clearly was an incredibly talented man. So it is great to hear now that Lotus (now owned by Proton over in Malaysia) have bought into what was the old Renault F1 team. Renault stay on as engine supplier.

However, Team Lotus, are still going to be racing in F1 too (Tony Fernandes etc) and both with JPS style livery allegedly so all a bit sad really, or something to be happy about?

Love the livery - there's something very special about a race car in JPS colours.  Personally, I prefer that to the Green/Gold Lotus look.

Poor old Tony Fernandes. He ran with green and gold this year, and then announced he wanted to switch to Black and Gold JPS for this year ... and then Danny Behr and the Group Lotus guys copied his idea. I think these two parties are gonna have to sit down and thrash this out before it gets silly.

The last time was had JPS livery, lotus and renault together, a Mr Senna was turning the wheel ...

The difference over a lap is a slim one but it was there, and the reason he was untouchable in qualifying ...

It's nice to think and relish the past but do we really want cigerette advertising to come back.

As a former, now occasional social smoker, myself I never found the tobacco sponsorship influenced me directly. I always used to just think, "ooh pretty colour scheme". But yes I was very aware of the tobacco brands indirectly I guess: Gitannes/Blue, JPS/Black & Gold, Marlboro/Red/White, Camel/Yellow, I even remember West, Winfield, Mild Seven ... and I've never even seen those ciggies anywhere (foreign brands, but I know now of them).

Would they have influenced me, or a 16 year old to light up though? Political correctness gone mad? Mmmm, not sure.

Just kidding. I managed to stop without giving up the F1.

By the way have you read about the new rules for 2011
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9275796.stm
This will make it even more interesting. I thought this years had more highlights than usual but moveable wings allowed/controlled by the FIA when within 1 second of the car in front will be a challenge. I can see the driver punching the button asking "why won't the b***y thing work",

I have now, thanks for that

I think the 'problem' with F1 is that you have some of the greatest engineering minds in the world working at a problem 24/7, and sometimes they end up over complicating things. I think last season was the best in yonks partly due to driver errors but mostly due to a ban on testing. In seasons gone by McLaren would have just hired Silverstone and kept pounding around with new bits till the car was quicker - not so now.

If these new changes make things nore exciting than last year then fantastic. But I think they need to look at some of the tracks too.

I've sat in that car..Visited classic team Lotus a few years back and got to sit in some very historic Lotus F1 cars.....Memories.

I see Lotus are stopping Team Lotus using the Lotus name and JPS colours.......So Lotus Renault F1 gets the rights.

Jaffa,
I think your right about the tracks. Anywhere there is a risk of rain normally brings some exciting changes to the race but where there's a risk of sand doesn't quite have the same effect.
Bringing the turbo's back will make a more fuel efficient race but as the power stays the same I'm not sure have much effect for the spectator.

Andy,
Did you ever get to see these race as well? I've been following F1 for many years and found that period much more interesting even though the whole race was rarely shown on the box.

Oh dear I'm starting to look back at the past.
Bring back Murray.
Ramble, ramble, ramble...

Read somewhere the 'new' engines will be 1.6 V4 units. Not quite the same ring as a V8 or V10. But that is the way of the world now. BMW M Division going the same way. How long before Maserati and the like start embracing that technology again as opposed to large displacement engines?
