Folks

I'm out on Thursday to get the 1st MOT test for the baby. Now, I've been reccomended the Tower Hamlets Council Public Test Centre; near home and convenient.

For those in/around SE London, see

http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/lgsl/851-900/869_mot_testing.aspx

Are there any things I'm a bit worried about in terms of the testing procedure? For example, I would check these guys have a roller brake tester (similar to putting the car for dyno testing) rather than letting them go to the road and use a decelerometer to check the brakes (I'll make sure they have no chance they are going out to drive the car). This is the only one that comes to mind, but if you figure/know of other things to be on alert, please drop a comment here.

Cheers

Morning Ed, as i understand it, the regs now state that all mot stations have to have  on site brake testing capabilties ie; (rear wheel rolling road) so you should be safe on that one, things to check out for  the obvious one like seat covers/ floor mats , and that they use latex gloves when the helper is fumbling about up in the car whilst up on the ramp  looking for switches/windscreen wipers washers , always noticed that some testers are a  little bit exuberant when it comes to checking wheel bearings  and ball joints  and steering play   seen some using a kin great crow bar  as leverage and when i see it , it makes me cringe  especially when there brake pipes in the close vicinity oh and the bouncing  about on the  wings to check the suspension/shocks

Other than that sit back and relax

Hope all goes well and you come out with that all important pass certificate
I usually say to the tester  that anything up to £50   just do it  wipers bulbs etc   usually saves  an over zealous  chap writing out the fail sheet  and the time/ trip back to  garage once its corracted

re- the fluids change  seems like you have more than done your homework Ed may well copy the spec when mine goes in for 31k service shortly

regards loz

If the test station is using the old style mechanical brake rollers do NOT allow them to test the car on it as you run a serious risk of breaking your transmission - It is fitted with a LSD remember. Just politely point out when booking that  they will need a Tapley meter and you will drive the car whilst it is being brake tested. I understand that the latest computerised rollers are a different ballgame as the test cycle is tailored to the exact model - I still refuse to take the chance and always insist on a manual road check WITH me driving.

hope this helps

Good observation. Yup, LSDs must not be used on roller testers. What about a plate tester? I guess I'm gonna get some faces if I demand I'm the one driving, which will be the case no doubt.

OK, got the MOT done today as planned. Everything went fine so I'm now sorted-out on this front. Great.

Just want to point-out the chaps at the Tower Hamlets MOT centre were absolutely 10/10. I felt I was properly taken care of, they allowed me to be by their side during the whole of the procedure, they found 1 niggle (more below) and were diligent in making me go under the lift to spot it out. Even they showed concern about the lack of lubrication of the handbrake assembly (another 1st for the service people at dealerships) and they got it sorted with me watching.

The place is immaculate, clean to the point you could almost eat on the floor. Equipment was the very latest and even though they said their brake testing computarised equipment could deal with cars fitted with LSD, they took no chance. It showed to me the folks were real car enthusiasts and appreciated working on such a nice piece of kit. Took real care. After hearing so many horror stories about MOT test centres, I was really impressed. Could only but recomment it to anyone living in the London area. Seriously.

And last but not least, they were not 20-yearish old monkeys but seasoned mechanics. Not the likes you see in most MOT test centres. Plus the fact they have no interest in selling you a fix, they will not fail you for niggles as many garages just to get some extra quid out of fixing the "problem".

So I would be pleased if a refernce about this place is put as a sticky in the forum for others to go when their MOT is due.

As for the niggle, one of the hydraulic lines snapped away from its fastener clip  and was loose, not dangerously loose but loose. The tester pointed it out to me that "usually, folks would fail your MOT for this..." and in 2 seconds moved the hose back in place, adding "...whilst it is so clear this is just what you need to do..." It's a snap-on clip, easy fix. But then he added "...how on earth a Maserati dealer would miss this during a routine service?" to which I could not agree more (as the care went into service just before hibernating).

Again, a show of what stealerships are all about

In summary, a big  and  to these people. For those in the London area, keep this reference handy.

Ed

Good to hear your review and that a garage treated you well. It reflects the service I get here in Bristol at 'My Garage'

Again they let me drive the car onto the ramps, let me rev the motor for emissions tests, use a Brake Box tester due to low ground clearance with me doing the driving, and take time to point out all advisories and anything else they see.

I take all my cars there...one every 1/4 and nerer failed to be impressed.

Where is 'your garage' Peter? I use Windsor Rd Garage in Horfield and they do a great job.

I hope this happens, and also for those elsewhere in the UK who have had great service from Test Centres around their area (e.g, Safrane).

We should do a rating system (not a name and shame, but a star system based on some simple survey-like questionnaire) for dealer/indies servicing. That's A MUST.
