Hi,

I have a quite interesting problem with my Maserati 222 SR.
I was driving on a track day last weekend and when the car revs got to about 5500 something cut off engine power. It felt like something hit you in the face. I had to take foot completely off the gas pedal and only then when I again pushed the pedal the power came back. The car wither cut off fuel or ignition, but I don’t know witch one and why.

This problem first occurred when I bought the car over a year ago, but it went away after I regulated the idle speed, changed the spark plug cables and all the vacuum hoses. But now the problem with the idle speed problem has came back so when I take my foot off the gas pedal revs start jumping especially with cold engine and adjusting the idle speed doesn’t seem to cure the problem anymore like it did the first time.

Any ideas what could be the problems and how to cure them?

Hi Vigri,

Trying to diagnose this without seeing or feeling the symptons is guess work really!

What was the engine / oil temperature at the time?

If the engine is not actually overheating then it sounds like the ECU thinks it is? maybe check the senders and wire connections and the Lamba sensors.

On the track you may get issues with the oil surging in the sump and starving the engine thus sudden overheating and leading to a terminal situation!!!! but it does not sound like this is the issue

Sorry can't help more than "thinking aloud"!

Sounds like a fuel cut, maybe due to overboosting and hence protecting the engine.
If you now have an idle issue perhaps dirty injectors?  I would have said it's worth cleaning the idle valve, but I'm sure it wouldn't cause the cut at 5500rpm too?  Perhaps they are only indirectly related?

Engine temperature never exceeded 100 C but mostly it was around 90 C and on normal driving it is about 80 C.
I also think it is fuel cut off but I can’t relate it to anything for certain.
Last year I replaced water temperature sensor because it was broken and the car didn’t start at all. I also measured the resistance of the sensor with outside temperature and resistance was about 2k instead of 3,5k as one graph I found on internet about Magneti Marelli 05.
Maybe I got a faulty one and the ECU thinks all the time that engine is hotter than it really is…
I wonder why this only now came into my mind…
I’ll do some exact measuring at home later tonight.
