Hi,

I've just bought myself a 91 Maserati 222 SR with a 2.8 liter engine. The car had been not driven for a year. It is in good condition, but the engine has some troubles.

When I first test droved it, it started badly and idling was very bad when the engine was cold, but when the engine got warmed up, these problems were gone.

Yesterday the car was delivered to me. The problems mentioned earlier were not gone but they were not so serious anymore. So I went for a drive. Got to drive about 3km and then when I lifted foot off gas pedal the engine stalled. It started again when I tried, ran for about 1-2 sec and then again stalled. Started it again, and the engine didn't stall if I pressed gas pedal a little, so I got do drive to nearby gas station with car few more times stalling. But after that when it stalled in the gas station it didn’t start again. There were no weird noises, the car just died and didn't start again.

Any ideas what could be the problem considering that the car hasn’t been seriously driven for about a year?

I also need to do cam belt change, so all good sites for parts would be helpful, because I live in Estonia and we don't have a local dealer here and it's on of the first Biturbos here.

Best regards,
Vigri

Congratulations on your purchase. A great car.

I am no expert on Maserati engines but I bought a 1991 Maserati 430 with a genuine 24,000 miles! It was stored nearly five years and running poorly. The cambelt looked ok so the first thing we did was add some fuel injector cleaner to help make it drivable. Then I sent the car via lorry to have a major service with a Maserati Specialist including a belt change. We discovered the alternator was faulty and replaced with a new one. It is also important to replace the fuel filters when doing the service.

Unfortunately it still runs a little poorly but today I am taking it to another specialist. Fingers crossed as we think its electrical.

I understand that one of the common things to check for is the Air Temp and Water Coolant sensors. These cars also need a healthy battery to run properly if the battery is flat or nearly flat it wont run at all. Hence I also have a new battery in my car. Start off by cleaning the electrical connectors before buying any new sensors. I should have done this myself instead of spending a lot of money on new sensors! When the ones I had were fine - I need keep as spare parts.

Once you have the car running do a compression check on each of the pistons just to be sure the engine is not worn out.

For spare parts etc visit http://www.eurospares.com/

or http://www.classicmaseratis.co.uk/index.php (not cheap but original spare parts available).

Keeps us posted of your progress. I will do the same....

Hi,

The fuel pump is running, but my mechanic suspected that the fuel pressure is a bit low. Maybe is the problem in fuel filters?

Spark plugs where not in good condition also. Seemed like the car had ran rich mixture before.

We have holidays here In Estonia at the moment so I can’t provide news about progress before Wednesday.

Fuel pressure is about 3 bar, so that shoudn't be the problem. But the spark plugs were black so it indicates that car was running rich mixture before. What could be the cause of it?

Mike of Roberts Aerospace spent 6.5 hours checking the car and was pleased to learn that everything was fine except there was fuel delivery issues. Revving engine etc was absolutely fine until the engine was under load when we noticed some injectors were playing not functioning correctly. Also the engine was still running for a bit too long when unplugging all the injectors - this means a couple of the injectors were stuck open or not closing properly.

My fuel pressure was 5.5 bar before reaching the regulator which would then manage the pressure to each of the two sides, giving me 2.5 to 2.75 roughly. The guidelines according to the manual is 2.5 so I am okay here. I also think your 3.0 bar if its one of the sides should also be okay unless that was before the regulator which mean you need a new fuel pump.

For visual spark plug checks go here:

http://www.autohausaz.com/html/spark-plugs_spark-plug-wires.html
and/or
http://www.globaldenso.com/PLUG/basic_knowledge/troubleshooting/index.html#case2

I will be sending my 6 injectors to a specialist to be checked and then fully refurbished:

- Ultrasonically cleaned including submersive pulsation
- Flaked paint removed & buffed
- Flow tested prior to dispatch
- Fit new o-rings, microfilters, spacers & pintle cap
- Tested for function, resistance, power and continuity

So they will be like new again

Hi,

I got the car running finally. The problem was in the coolant temperature sensor. I also changes timing belt, engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and had some more little thing done. Now the car runs well. Thanks to all for help you provided.

Hi,   I have used the car now daily for about a week, and it runs great. But there are also some problems left. ·        The speedometer doesn’t show the speed correctly, when I drive at 100 km/h speedometer shows 70 km/h. ·        The fuel level gauge only shows maximum of ¼ of the tank even if the tank is full. ·        When the air conditioning is turned on it started to blow in bad stink but when air conditioning is turned off it stops. Does it have somewhere an air filter for air conditioning unit or what might be the problem?

I was only doing 70 Officer...honest! Yeh we have all used that one.

The Fuel gauge is likely a perished sensor or the float is leaking and therefore not floating on top of the fuel as it should.

The Air Con needs sanitising, if it's not used much or not cleaned bacteria [Cladosporium, Penicillium Viridicatum and Aspergillus] builds up on it giving a musty smell, this can also affect the passengers and give you cold like symptoms and itchy eyes. You can get it done at a specialist or if funds are tight DIY with products as per the link.

Hi,

When i was doing over radio contacts something in passenger side door made  a really loud click. After that the central locking doesn't work any more. When I sit in and shut the do something near glove compartment makes some roaring(can't find a better word) noise for a second or so and then it stops. But when one door is locked and other is not and the doors are closed that same sound appears again but is constant and doesn't go away after while.
Any suggestions what could be the problem?

Hi,

Foud out what is making that noise and it seems like central locking controll unit. Module is made by "bitron video", and has P/N 2043018 on the case. It also bears # 549.197 on the case.
I also cheked all the fuses in the main fuse box and all 14 of them were OK.
Found the right fuse, and it’s OK. Also it has 12 V when the ignition is turned on. There are also cigar lighter and door open lights under that same fuse. But when I measured the voltage on cigar lighter contacts then there was only 0,5 volts and it was there weather the ignition was on or off.
Also does anyone have an electric schema for this model of any biturbo model?

Try 'Enricos Masearti Pages'. Think he has a few wiring diagrams on his site.
