Hi everyone! My name is Jesse O'Connor and I'm a professional detailer living in Budapest, HU. I was asked by one of the members on this board to post the detail I did on his car, so here you go Stu :)! I have had the pleasure of detailing a few other Maseratis, so if you guys and gals are interested I'll post those, too. I have an even larger collection of exotics that I've detailed but this is a Maserati forum so I'll post those only if requested :).

Here's a 2002 Maserati Coupe GT that I had the pleasure of spending a week with. The owner called me and asked if I could have a look at his new baby and see if there was anything that needed to be done to it and upon inspection I actually found a couple of spots on the car that were rusted. One was on the passenger door where someone had scraped the door on the ground as they were opening it. The shape of the car hid the damage very well because you could only see it if you were on all 4's. Anyway, rust had started to spread its way through the paint, almost like varicose veins... and the paint had started to bubble on that corner of the car. Also, there was a part on the back wing where the bumper and the body meet that had started to rust, which also needed to be addressed.

You may be thinking, "A rusty Maserati??? How dare they???!!!" This car sat in a garage in the UK for a very long time before finding a good owner like my client. He only had 19k original miles on him, as well so other than the dust/rust/washing scratches he was in fairly good condition. So I advised the owner on what should be done, we agreed and he left the car with me for a week to get the repaint and detailing done. First I dropped him off at the airport on Monday morning then took Gino (that's the car's name :)) to my paint and body guy. The color was a bit difficult to match perfectly but in the end it was spot on. I picked the car up on Wednesday night and then took it to the dealership on Thursday morning.

After closer inspection, I realized that the paint wasn't up to my standards (had some OP and specks of dust in it) and took it back to my guy immediately. It wasn't actually my friend that did or even inspected the work so I won't hold it against him. Anyway, everything was OK after some sanding and polishing so I went back to my work and finished late on Saturday afternoon. Enough of my lip... I present you with Gino and unless someone's got one of these that's got 0 km on it and is tucked away in a bubble somewhere, I think this is now the cleanest Coupé on the streets :) >>

Plenty of contamination to remove from this car... don't think it had ever seen a drop of wax before I got it...

This was the only decent shot I got of the damage, but the entire car was a swirly monster.

A 50/50 of the passenger door. Poor Gino (that's the car's name :)) was a dirty boy both inside and out.

Some 50/50's of the passenger seat... somebody was a little piggy.

Seats laid all the way back to clean the bottoms.

Message to previous owner: Slap yourself. Harder. I spent a good 2 hours removing pieces and seats in this car to remove all the shipping plastic that was still all over the interior.

What was removed from the passenger side alone...

Had to squeeze the door grommets back into place.

The driver's seat... funk.

After being scrubbed with a small detail brush and a 1:20 mix of Insta Finish Super APC...

From the back of the car...

Had to remove the door seals to get everything cleaned up.

Some small details in the trunk

Some rusty nuts... :) in the engine compartment, that I removed and repainted. This car was obviously kept in a damp garage or maybe even outside. Poor little guy.

Topped off the washer fluid (this detail was done back in the beginning of October so not freezing yet ;))

Engine cleaned by hand with APC then dressed with Insta Finish Super Dress All.

The polishing was done with Insta Finish Insta Cut #15 and a Scholl wool pad, followed by Insta Cut #15 and a finishing pad. The LSP for today was Swissvax Concorso. Enjoy the afters!

Thanks for reading and to all the Playboy subscribers, thanks for "reading"!

- Jesse

Jess,

Great work on the Maserati. I had mine Swisvax'ed about 18 months ago and even after 14 hours on the car it did not look as good as this.

Great to see the new owner taking so much trouble with the car after the difficult start he had.

Shame you are not closer to the uk.

Fantastic work! I'm in the process of buying a Range Rover Vogue with a part cream leather interior, I hope it will look as good as this Maserati when i clean it.

Out of curiosity, for light colour leather, what products do you recommend? My 3200 has the black leather so doesn't show up dirt that well so I just stick with Gliptone, but I have a feeling the cream leather will show up everything!

Thank you mate! Gliptone I can't comment on, as I've not used it. I use Chemical Guys Green Cleaner or Insta Finish Super APC, but I would suggest you use the Extreme Leather Cleaner http://www.chemicalguysuk.com/product_p/letclea.htm because you don't need to dilute it or worry about its pH value because it's ready to go. After you've cleaned it wit that and used a toothbrush to get into all the cracks/wrinkles, wipe it clean with a microfiber towel, let it dry for a bit *a couple of hours with the doors open* and then apply some leather conditioner http://www.chemicalguysuk.com/product_p/letcond.htm. If your leather is dry you'll need to apply it in sessions to bring back the suppleness. By "sessions" I mean let the first application completely dry before you apply more cream. Applying too much at one time will only make the seats under the leather wet!

Wow! Gino's cosmetic work is up on the forum at last. Let me say a few words about Jesse, as if the pictures of his work don't say enough.

Jesse and I met by chance at the Ferrari-Maserati service centre here in Budapest. He was bringing a brand new California up to showroom condition and we got to talking. Of course, knowing that a fellow expat has a detailing business, and that the dealer here trusts Jesse with their brand new cars, as well as those of their clients, I thought I'd discuss how to bring my 2002 GT up to the kind of condition I wanted.

I have to say that working with Jesse is a pleasure. I've learned a lot about detailing in the short time we've known each other, including how other hand car washes can ruin his Swissvax finish! Gino is now in an amazing condition, I'm so proud of him!

I'm certain he would travel to work for any of the UK forum members and for this quality of work, a few travel expenses on top of his very reasonable fees would probably still be worth it.

I know this forum isn't about Ferraris but we might also want to ask Jesse to post pics of the 458 Italia he just detailed for the dealer in Budapest

Cheers for the kind words, Stu! Gino deserves the love I give him :). If anyone would like to see the world's first Ferrari 458 Italia detailed just let me know and I'd be happy to post.
