I took my stripped down engine to Chorlton this am in my TR250 Marios was going to look at it as arranged but he had nipped out to Chester.

One of his ace mechanics had a look, I thought it was going to be an easy rebuild for none of the bearings were
coppered or scored just nice and grey, crank fine etc etc BUT I had appoplexy when told I would need new valve lifters rebore etc etc and could cost around 10K, just to sort the Engine,

I love the look of the Maserati Merak and wish to complete the rebuild and get it on the road, but I am pauper Pete sadly, and I can get a V6 with 250 horses for a lot lot less than 10K, jaguar make a nice V6, has anyone done this or will nobody speak to me anymore for mentioning such a sin regards Peter

Peter,

Unbeknownst to you prior to this email, I drove up to Darlington with a friend of mine to view that Merak. In my opinion, the engine looked to be quite a straightforward and relatively inexpensive job. The body and trim - well that was the deal breaker for me.

I think that you will destroy the value if you went away from original, but a Biturbo V6 might be an interesting option.

Hi guys,

Had some time off work recently and glued to the box circa 3-4pm everyday. Digital channel called Quest haveb been showing 2 series, one called 'a 4x4 is born' and 'an MG is born' or som'et like that. Now the presenter, whose face is familiar, purchased first a knackered old Land Rover, and then a knackered old MGB andset up restoring them himself. Wow! The amount of time, effort, and money the chap put into restoring that little MG was just incredible. And it was beautiful to see that car go from a barn find to a concours queen. But, it got me thinking, to actually undertake sucg a restoration properly like that on an expensive Italian car properly must surely be bank bursting, unless you have the tools and the skills to tackle most jobs as he did. Even he had to sub out painting, leathers and stuff though.

To have a Merak with knackered bdywork and now mechanicals, surely requires very deep pockets to put right. I can only imagine the joy such a project would give, but sometimes one has to be realistic about the finances. Having said that, I would rather see the car back on the road than broken for spares  If you must put another engine in, go Italian please!!!! Alfa 3.0 V6 would slot in quite nicely I would imagine - alot of the Stratos rep. boys do it. And then when your numbers come up, pop in the rebuilt unit.

Duncan, I think the series presenter's workshop was based not far from you.

Best,

Charles

thanks for the tips boys  my Merak isnt the darlington one, 495 has not been used for 24 years or so ansd was stripped down to a rolling shell only, the rest is in boxes, but driveshafts brakes are all new interior was connolised before the strip down and never sat in and the body although showing surface corrosion in a few places is very good, I would post a few pics if I knew how.

Could I transfer them from photobucket?

Hello Peter,

Pictures - yes please - we like those very much!!!!!!!!!!  Just press 'click to upload images' under the typing pane and you can upload the images if you have them on your PC (I find this way best). Or click the postcard image top right above the pane and post in the photobucket web urls for the images.

What are the sills like on the car? If you are prepared to travel 'darn 'sarf abit to the Midlands there are some other guys you could show the engine too. Just for a second opinion to be sure, but Marios really does know his onions when it comes to the classics. But no harm in a 2nd pair of eyes and all that.

Best,

Charles
