Hi,

I have an 80 Merak SS and need to confirm something regarding cam timing.  On the right side head, there are long and short marks on the cams that are used to line up to the hash mark on the cam cap. Can anyone confirm it the right side is suppose to line up with the long or short marks? (with #1 @ tdc)  the left side head only has long marks.

Best regards from California
Charles

It sounds like the same type of timing marks on my 69' V8.  Lining up cyl #1 at TDC and the cam mark in line with the corresponding mark on the cam cap.  On the opposite bank where you see two lines on the cam, the first line ( first in terms of the direction of engine rotation) should also align when cyl # 1 is at TDC.  The second mark should align when the next piston (in firing order sequence) is at TDC, in my case cyl #8.
It worked on mine but go gently and check the firing order on your 6 cyl car so you can check the correct cylinder for TDC when the second mark comes around and lines up.
Again, on my car this TDC/Cam position relates to the beginning of the induction stroke, therefore the position of the distributor rotor should be 180 degrees away from cylinder #1 ignition pickup point.
Don't take anything for granted and if anyone has Merak experience speak to them or get expert help.  I'm not a mechanic, just an enthusiatic cheapskate who won't pay for someone qualified to take the job on but I hope this helps all the same.

Hi Charles

I have a 1976 Merak and will be faced with the problem of setting up the engine again when I receive the heads back with new valves.
Looking from the back of the car cylinder number 1 is the one nearest to you on the left hand head.
Cylinder number 6 is the one nearest to you on the right hand head.As I understand it the longest marks on the cam relate to cylinder number 1 at tdc and should line up with the marks on the caps. The shortest marks should line up with the marks on the caps when cylinder number 6 is at tdc.
Hope this is of some help.Let us know how you get on.

Regards

Mike
