I suppose most of you know how the old XWX's can deteriorate with sidewalls getting harder and cracking? I have been going around my car and think the rear tyres are frm mid 80's!! One has cracking on inside face. HAd all the wheels off to check their condition and look at tyres! Front two I think are form late 90's.
None of the tyres have done more than 9000 miles but desperate to change them as car felt odd when drivng and wobbly at high speeds!
Going to put pirelli P4000's on.
Also went round and checked the underseal and topped it up around wheelarches and exposed parts on floor and spare wheel pan
Only taken one and half days and feeling old and sore now! lol
The XWX's dont wear much so the tread seems good but if over 6 years old I would scrap them and doubt would buy them for any car if a modern tyre is available

Hi
just put the Pirellis on this morning and decided to use the car to drive to London! So far done 25 miles and just stopped off at a mates house in birmingham and hoping to meet a fellow Khamsin owner shortly!
In short is a complete transformation!
the car used to pull to one side and doesnt now!
the ride was very hard and is now firm but pliant
The handling was dodgy with 'lightness' when turning and that has gone
there is more feel in the steering and the car feels stable and not nervous at motorway speeds of 70-80
Noise is less
Am still reluctant to press the car too much as I would like to set up the geometry as I think these tyres may require a slightly different geometry to get the best form them
they cost £100 each compared to £300 for new xwx's
in short I think you would have to be mad to put XWx's backl on a a car. after all it is only the tyres that keep you in contact with the road
once the tyres have settled in after this 1000 mile return journey i will post more

Hi

i was suprised to see a posting that was so kind to the P4000 tyres on your car, so i looked into the Khamsin. One of the features of this car is the very modern powersteering systems. It is this powersteering that makes your car react well to the P4000 which is a modern tyre designed more for cars like the later XJ Jaguars of the 80's. The XWX is a sports car tyre that will give excellent directional stability and  importantly, for a sports car, delivers progressive handling rather than the greater road holding that the P4000 gives due to it's extremly wide foot print suited to breaking and accelerating in a straight line. Which is different to the type of tyre you need for progressive and sporting cornering.

The XWX is a brilliant tyre it would be interesting to know how old your tyres were. on the side of the tyre there is a series of letters and numbers that starts with DOT, at the end of this series of letter and numbers on one side of the tyre there is an oval patch stamped into the tyre which is obviously changable in the tyre mould that chould have 4 number in it. for instance 1209 would mean the 12th week of 2009. if it said 129 that would mean that it was made in the 12th week of 1989. if iot said 129 and there was a triangle or arrow symbol in the panel that would mean 12th week of 1999

Earlier this year I bought a new set of XWXs for my 1974 Merak. I have driven 2,500 Kms this season and I am very happy with them in terms of grip and handling as well as comfort. Price is really the only thing to moan about...

Cheers,
Gabriel
