After the horrendous expense of a full wiring loom replacement earlier this year and a full respray after some lowlife keyed almost one entire side of the car, i had to have my 55 plate QP recovered last week after an alternator belt snapped. Rare but nor expensive i thought. Unfortunately it was a symptom rather than the problem. The A/c compressor had failed. and whilst having a look around the car we found new front tyres and balancing are in order. unfortunately some of the bolts on the suspension on the right side (which have to be removed as part of the geometry check) have seized. so i am now up for a right arm suspension change. costs? 1300 for the suspension arm, 2850 for the a/c compressor, tyres and geometry about 800 all in, oh and some brake pads at the back just for fun. 450 overall. and my earlier delay to my service (on account of my wiring costs) really cannot continue so throw in a major service. plus the 2 yearly fluid changes. and thats before i decline to have the lambda sensors and carbon filter changes (the environment can go hang....). i reckon this year i am up to 23k in repair and maintenance costs. car is not worth much more than that (but emotionally worth more of course). point of my posting is if anyone can counter my wife's argument that we should sell my QP and a little Afla we have and exchange for something 'sensible'. She didnt like my suggestion of a 612 scaglietti (4 door, spacious, good luggage space, etc...). any suggestions? only car i half like and which does the city and motorway job would be the evoque but they are horrendously expensive in nice equipment and there's an 8 month waiting list.....

blimey, £23k!?

Wow.

Thats got to be about the most expensive year ever.....one things for sure, whatever you do replace it with should be cheaper to run!  Are those indy prices or are you having it looked after by a main agent?

In terms of a replacement.....for me, the QP is the ultimate saloon.  Others in the running would be a CLS55, M5 (great value, will drop even more when the new F10 becomes more available), or maybe something like an RS4.

Or another QP? :)

it certainly is my QP parked near the church - nice of you to notice her! when i saw her in the azure blue / cream leather i knew she was mine, but it has been a world of financial pain ever since! trouble is, although i see sense in buying a more sensible reliable car, i just dont like anything else on the market. well, except for a certain 2009 612 scag at dick lovett in swindon........

It could be worse. If a buy a new QP you'll loose that in a year in depreciation alone.

Hi LittleBro - yes, i tried that line of argument with her indoors, ie that a new QP would at least be under warranty and so over 3 years, at say 20k a year maintenance i would say, plus the value of the car, we are already up to a 100k sport gts. perfect logic to me but she just wont listen. heard a rumour that the evoque will get a supercharged engine next year (please let it be the 5l one). am test driving one tomorrow but it doesnt set the heart a flutter like an italian car. ive only owned three cars so am pure italian - Fiat Panda Sergio Tachini edition (there's class for you...), an Afla 145 (never had a thing go wrong) and the QP.... so in theory i should be up for a Ferrari next to keep the bloodline pure.. again Mrs does not agree!!!!

Ewan - that is some consolation indeed! a friend of mine bought a rapide last year for 150k (despite all the "ford mondeo parts bin" jokes aimed at him). now its worth 90k. ouch ouch ouch.....

The problem is needing 4 seats. As a rule, 4 seat italian exotics drop in value at a disastrous rate (think Ferrari 456 or 612, or Maz QP). 2 seats, on the other hand, are a lot more rosy. The value of Fez 355's seems to have gone up this year, and all 3 Lambo's I ran a few years ago were sold for what I paid for them (after I'd used each as my daily car for a year). I did 10,000 miles in my last Diablo for free. Swapped to a QP (had children by then) and lost the equivalent of throwing a Diablo away. With regards to the Evoque, don't be thinking Land Rover dealers charge less than Mazer chaps. I swapped our family car (the QP) for a supercharged RR, and the bills on that are not insubstantial.....!
