Hi Ex There are plenty of posts on the subject of buying 3200's and 4200's, so take a little time to run through the various threads; you may also wish to visit the Sports Maserati Forum for more opinions (Google it if you are not already aware). I'm not that familiar with the specifics of the 4200 as I had a 3200, so can only generalise as follows: Common to both models is the need for a pre-purchase independent inspection, because if you buy a bad 'un it will make your eyes water from a financial perspective, and tempting though it is to buy on emotion (love at first sight etc) do try to concentrate on condition and a properly documented history as they are crucial. A good PPI will probably cost around £250-400, and it will be money well spent. Whether buying from the trade or a privateer try to factor in a decent warrantly, at least for the first year while you get to know the car. Your budget will help decide the age of your car, but try to get as late a model as possible as a lot of Mas functions are software related and it's best to have the latest software installed, especially if you decide to opt for paddle change instead of a manual. There was also a styling facelift that you may want to consider; I think it was introduced around 2004. You can find out about recalls (aka campaigns) from the VOSA website, and a Mas dealer should be able to confirm that all necessary campaigns have been applied to a particular car. Don't listen to any vendor stories about 'they all do that' etc, especially in respect of warning lights. That usually means you'll be paying for someone else's lack of proper care and maintenance. Despite the stories about Italian unreliabilty and electrical gremlins Maseratis are superb cars and have come on in leaps and bounds since the introduction of the 3200,and serious problems should not be expected. Buy the right car and you'll be smitten. Buy the wrong one and prepare for poverty. 'Tis fun though, good luck PH
