Hi

I've just bought a Ghibli which has had a bit of a knock....

The OSF wheel is turned under a bit, so I think that it will need a new rear wishbone or perhaps a whole subframe.

Q1. I have a spare rear subframe from an '87 four door Biturbo, will that fit? If not, what vehicle has the correct subframe?

The vehicle is immobilised with the code lost

Q2. Is there a way around the immobiliser, even if it means cutting and joining wires?

It's a '94 model with coil packs.

Thanks in advance
Duncan

Dunc, there are 3 chaps who will be able to answer you for sure: David Askew www.davidaskew.co.uk Marios at Autoshield www.autoshieldmaserati.co.uk and I think a chap called Paul?? a mechanic at Bill McGraths Maserati (the guy is a Biturbo/Ghibli god)

I once had an immobiliser issue on an old car, so I jerry rigged a seperate battery with wires to the rear light clusters (using the light stalk as an ignition on/off switch) and the fuel pump, it worked and I could fire the car up. Don't know if that would suffice on a Ghibli though.

2nd that David Askew should know  what your asking and may well have the necessary parts to sort you out ,  Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs Dunc   are you 100% sure its immobilised  and there isnt a fuel cut out somewhere that gets activated on impact, the 3200 has one and so does the 4200    been caught out myself a couple of times  with other makes

regards loz

Slumming it a bit down here aren't you Loz?

I haven't had the Ghibli delivered yet, so I'm just sending out speculative Q's at present.

The rear subframe will not fit.
Eurospares sight should confirm that.

I've no idea on the immobiliser I'm afraid.
Good luck with the repair job. If you need any bits from the interior, we have loads.

Mine has an old Clifford immobiliser, i did  look into a new system including alarm and the mobile alarm man said he would just take the old system out, and replace it for £300. Clearly he knows what he is looking at and which wires to cut.

Thanks for your help so far.

The Ghibli was delivered this morning and its now up on my ramp. The right rear wishbone is bent, along with the rear damper and anti-roll bar. The rear drive shaft has separated at the outer CV joint. The immobiliser looks like an after-market fitting, so I may well be able to bypass it as I did on my Biturbo Spyder.

I have the wishbone and drive shaft from the '87 Biturbo which I broke, and, as far as I can see, they look identical. I have to take off the broken stuff anyway, so I will offer them up to see whether they will fit. I have the spring/damper assembly too, but I am guessing that they will differ internally (am I right?)

I will definitely need the rear anti-roll bar and probably the parts listed above, so if you can help, please call me on 07949 158239 or send me a PM or an email to duncanclarke@fsmail.net.

Unsurprisingly, the interior clock is missing, so guess that I'll be scouring eBay for that little gem.

I have attached a photo of the car.

Regards
Duncan

I've just noticed that I'll need a driver's door glass and mirror.

PS, I have now become a senior member. How did that happen?

I spent a couple of hours carefully removing the OSR trailing arm. No seized nuts or bolts, so that was a relief. Now all I need to do is to swap the hub and bearings on to the Biturbo trailing arm and I can start to reassemble. I can wait a bit for the anti-roll bar and damper, because just as soon as I have the car rolling, I will attempt to get her running.

Great stuff Duncan     best start a thread on owners running reports  on the Ghibli ,  Loads will be interested as years go by, and  more and more will require your know how / experience when doing the same or their own maintenance

regards loz

That is interesting.
Looks like the engine bay of an ABS model (coil packs and dump valves) but no abs in the top right corner.

Perhaps it's had an engine replacement at some stage? The interior is clearly that of a pre-abs Ghibli.

I had a fair go at fitting the trailing arm from the '87 model, but, after pressing out the hubs on each of the arms, I found that the inner bearing is different, as is the diameter of the hub shaft. So now I really do need to get a RH rear swinging arm from a late model. I have been told that the modification to 5 studs and the deep brake drum is what I am looking for, Post 1992, or thereabouts. Any pointers would be useful.

You need to be sure on this Duncan
They changed around 94.  If I can see a picture of the wheels I should be able to tell you if it's the later or earlier setup.
