Hi everyone. I have been lurking for a while and reading the really helpful stuff that there is on this forum. The reason for surfacing now? I am reasonably close to buying a QP - Mrs Mattress and I are going for a second viewing next week, so fingers crossed it all works out. I have a question about clutches. Does the ZF and the Duoselect clutches wear in different ways? I have read a lot about life expectation of the clutch and when it should be changed (at no more than 75% seems to be the consensus). Is this both types of clutches? Thanks for any advice and I look forward to (hopefully) sharing news of my purchase in the near future. Busted

Best of luck with the purchase;

The ZF is a full Auto and as such does not have a clutch

The DS is a robotised gear box with manual changes via the paddles, it does have an auto setting but this is not an auto box so will never give as smooth a change as a full auto.

The clutch wear is only a guide, and can be up to 15% out, and if you have the right computer you can re-set to 0% [if your a dodgy garage]. I know of may cars that have gone past the indicated reading to 100%+ but of couse you do risk damage to the flywheel if you don't have it checked.

I have all three types of gear boxes on my little fleet and IMO the F1 box [Duo Select or Cambio Coras on the 4200] is the best of both worlds esp if you like to hussle down the lanes.

Peter, thanks that's very helpful.  I wasn't aware about the 'descretion' available to garages to reset!  Will keep the forum informed as to how I go on.

True but very few garages have the specialist computer to do it.

Safrane, have you bought your 4200 back mate?

I was tempted as it did come up for sale shortly after I sold it.

Hoping to get a GS this year or may wait for an early GT 4.2

An update - agreed a price with the dealer yesterday and hope to pick the car up in a week when my number plate transfer has gone through. Haven't felt this excited about picking up a new car for many years! I'll post pictures when I can. Dave

Great. What year/gearbox/colour? Safrane, 4.2 GTs are getting good value. Prices are higher than historic Maserati but a 4 year old GT has a slow rate of depreciation ex the initial dealer margin.

2009 - ZF gearbox, in black. It is the 4.2 QP. There are a reasonable amount of extras that the first owner had on the car which made it attractive and it had already been reduced just before Christmas. I managed to squeeze a bit more and get the warranty extended and was very pleased with the deal. The picture has gone from the dealers site already (happily, seeing as it has my name on it now!) otherwise I could have put a link. I have been obsessing about these cars since I caught sight of my first in 2006, in London. Still can't quite believe I am going to be having this amazing piece of kit sitting on my drive some time soon!

Another question just occurred - the dealer was in contact today to recommend this coating (I forget the exact name - Body cover or something like that?) that they put across the body work and underside. It acts like a permanent polish and includes polishing the car up first and scotchguarding the inside. Quoted price of £400 VAT included. Does anyone have any experience and whether this is worth having. I would rather not pay another £400 but don't want to miss out on something which has some real value if it is good. Thanks Dave

An update - I now have the car as of last week. It is an absolute joy to drive and makes very mundane journeys, well, really quite fun. I am struggling a bit to post the picture I have of it on my first day with it parked in our office car park. If it is not below I will retry in a separate post ....

car looks great, good choice, ZF is a great box, i used to have a 2008 4.2 GTS, had it three years, pretty smooth changes during auto mode, and pretty quick when using the paddles in sport mode.

Car looks great! Enjoy (while I look on with envy and wait to find one of my own :-) ). The ZF gearbox really is good - I had one on my XFR and it was beautifully smooth yet still offered fast changes and some real punch in sport mode. I tested a GTS with the same box last weekend and it was a complete pleasure to drive.

The body guard waxy coating thing is well worth it (in my view). I had a few cars treated with that kind of product. There are a few different brands all doing broadly the same thing. Superguard seems pretty popular. I seldom wash a car from one month to the next yet with this kind of coating they always come up immaculate.

Cheers,
Adam
