Hello,

This is my first post here. I have read many dozens of threads and impressed with the friendly nature of the forum.

I am in the market for a new car (in London now - will be shipping it to NZ later this year) and test drove a 2004 GT yesterday. Fabulously beautiful car and I love how it combines sublime luxury in the cabin with ferocious power when you want it!

I have not yet been able to test drive a Quattroporte (I wasn't able to find one near central London within my budget) but I do very much like the look of the car and the interior even more so than the GT.

Here's my situation: having had some fast cars in the past (Jaguar XJS, BMW M3), and having had only sensible cars most recently, I'm longing for something with passion. I've looked at Porsche 911 (can't bring myself to like the look of it), Jaguar XKR (love the post 2007 one but they're too expensive for me), and the Maseratis.

Both I and my wife will be driving the car and my wife will be using it mainly in auto. She will be pleased with a car that can seat four people (although this won't happen very often, and not on very long trips), and that has a reasonable size boot. Most importantly for her (and also importantly for me) is that the cabin is as luxurious as possible. She likes leather, wood trim, and seems to really appreciate the interior of the Maseratis (her favourite interior is the pre 2007 Jaguar XJ, to give you an idea). My wife will NOT be driving the car in as 'spirited' a manner as me and when asked says that, within the world of high performance cars, what she wants is something that is reasonably reliable.
For me performance is very important (but mainly on twisty B-roads, not on motorways), and the feeling of driving something special.

So, that's a long way to get to my question: GT or QP?

Our budget: a meagre 25K. The GT we looked at today was a 2004 that had done 31K miles and costs 22K. The QP I was looking at earlier (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201117386026268/sort/priceasc/usedcars/maximum-mileage/up_to_60000_miles/transmission/automatic/model/quattroporte/make/maserati/radius/1500/postcode/w1u2jb/page/1?logcode=p) is slightly over budget (but that's asking price) and is a 2004 with only 25K miles.

Your suggestions and thoughts are most welcome!

AT 25K i would go for a 4200 GT or a Gransport ( I prefer a Gransport more refined Cambiocorsa gearbox with auto, a little more power, better handling, for me it looks better also). For 25K you will get very early QP's, beautiful motors though they are they will come with the duoselect gearbox which is fine in main but jerky in the city and i would even go as far as to say abit more thirsty, higher wear on the clutch also. The ZF auto boxes in QP would suit you best mate from what you are saying, if you can stretch to that, then that sounds like the perfect car for you both.

Good luck with your search, and i hope you enjoy whatever you decide to buy

As above, for £25k, I'd be looking at a GS.  I'm slightly biased, but they're a great car.

The biggest issue I would have would be dirving it in Auto - it works, but it will eat through your clutch.  I would go for the GS and try to get the wife up to speed with using the paddles.  They're intuitive and once she's got the hang of it (a couple of drives), she'll be hooked!

I envy you - a GS on NZ's South Island roads is the stuff of dreams....
