Let me start by saying that I am completely new to the Maserati marque, but having seen the new Grantourismo at the FOS I was really impressed and as I am in the market for a new GT I have booked a test drive and also put my name down on the waiting list for one.

However, whilst I know that depreciation is a major issue on Massers I have also read some real horror stories on the net about their reliability and that really is a worry, as above all I want something reliable. Probably, I'm just looking for re-assurance as already owning a Morgan Aero 8 I'm quite used to the sort of irritating maladies that one would expect to get with a Maserati, but some posts talk of serious mechanical woes and expensive repairs.

Perhaps some owners of QP's could give me their own experience of what it is like to run a modern Maserati and the joys and problems of same.

3200's have some horror stories for reliability..the 4200 is better but still can be unreliable...the QP up to now has been reliable with no major horrow stories, but they are 'super cars' and have the same sort of running cars to boot. Maserati are making a big fuss about the new GT being reliable enough to temp 911, BMW, Merc, etc owners and they are aiming to make the car cheaper to run. Only time will tell but they need this car to be an reliable car.

I have only had one piece of bad luck with my 4200 Spyder when the F1 pump failed, but frankly I know folks with Astons and Mercs that almost live at the dealerships. I haven't heard of issues with the QP and I doubt the Granturismo will be a let down. Maserati really seem to have been fighting to lift reliablility. I went round the factory a couple of years ago but you could see the staff are really into the marque and striving to raise the game.

Thanks Guys, I'll let you know what I think after the test drive, but for now I'm smitten.

I was exactly where you are now about 3 or 4 weeks ago. A long drive in a QP and it was goodbye AMG hello Maserati.

I was so keen, I decided to take one of the new cars in the showroom, which wasn't far off the colour and spec I'd have ordered. At least it being there already allowed me to do some serious haggling.

So what can I tell you - I've had the car 8 days, I love it, and throughout all that time it's been 100% reliable

As for ''the joys of running one'', on Thursday I'm taking it from Cheshire down to London for a couple of days which will be my first long journey, so I'll let you know, but on first impressions I'd say go for it, the build quality feels very impressive and the whole brand feels as if it is definitely on the 'up'.

Good luck,

Guy

Hello guy and wellcome
exactly wich AMG do you refer to?
a good friend of mine had a nice dillema what to choose, CLS AMG or QP auto
round went to the Merc, in my opinion best choise
In this upper class i believe that smooth ride is more needed than sportiness, and don't forget 460BHPs and over 63 KgN torque, right?

Thanks Guy that also is very helpful. To be honest, one of the things putting me off the cars in the past was the SMG gearbox. Living in the crowded South-East, I need a car that is easy to drive in traffic.

Anyway, I'll let you all know more after the test drive.

Cheers

Hello Panos, thanks for the welcome.

I used to drive AMG cars, I've had 3, and expected to change my E55 [estate] for another AMG.

I hadn't decided on any particular model, but I did have a CL63 for 24 hours. That was fantastic, but very expensive; I drove the CLS as a 55 before the 63 came out, and liked it, but the QP just stole my heart in a way that none of the Mercs did.

I could argue a logical case for any of them over the QP, but I fell in love with the Maserati.

I've no wish to offend owners of any marque, but so many manufacturers produce extremely well engineered cars then kill the concept with incredibly bland and repetitive styling. Most folk could identify Mercedes/BMW/Porsche/etc even if de-badged, because the models in each range are so similar; they look nice, are luxurious and well finished, but just vary in size and spec, and that's compounded by the sea of silver paintwork that's all too common these days. Could it be that fleet buyers have too much influence nowadays? Take the badges off your Mas and see how many could identify it.

Maserati may have had mixed fortunes over the years, and build quality may never reach the German or Japanese standards, but they have style and character that everyone else seems determined to eliminate. Even the Trident gets people thinking. OK, so Italian depreciation and running costs can be just a touch terrifying, but can you imagine the reaction in one or two boardrooms if 'Mas and co' finally laid the quality ghosts to rest?

Then again, volumes would increase, and like P...... you might end up with a Mas on every corner, and we don't want that now, do we?
