Hello all, new chap here needing some help and advice.

Thinking of getting a GT sometime soon, after many years of Porsche ownership.

Will be getting a used one, may be around £50k mark. Thought about getting one privately but just feel a bit nervous. Is buying from a dealership network any safer?

My main concern is clocking, as I know there are some very sophisticated ways of clocking the cars and very difficult to detect. So I'll prob need to judge the car by it's condition rather than just looking at the millage.

Anybody know of a good indy who can do a pre-purchase inspection in the E.Midlands?

Still soaking up info about the car, as I don't really know much about it other than it looks fantasticly gorgious, so please pardon me for the stupids questions!

Hi Mick You usually tend to find these exotics are not driven as much as 'regular' marques so whilst high mileage/clocking is a risk I would say not the biggest concern. Repair cost, especially of a car that has not been properly maintained, can get very high. In terms of total cost of ownership, I could not imagine not buying a certified pre-owned from a dealer with as long a warranty as possible. My dealer has been excellent in supporting warranty claims. If nit buying through a main dealer then yes, inspection by someone experienced in Masers is an absolute must. However, personally I would recommend the dealer route and building a relationship with them. Best of luck in your quest. Shak

Chears Shak.

Sounds like buying from a dealer is the way to go then.

Would you still bother with the PPI if it has a warrenty with a dealer?

It's going to be a weakend/trips car for me so I won't be doing mega millage myself. I should look it up myself but what is the service schedule like? Cost aside, the last thing I need is having to take the car in for servicing every few months!

I've seen a few GTs on trackdays a few times, they must chew through the tyres and brakes like nobody's business on track, given the weight of the car? Wouldn't mind trying it myself though.

Servicing is not cheap but then not ridiculously expensive either. The intervals are in line with any luxury brand. My main advice is to take your time and enjoy the experience of finding out about these cars. Go see and drive as many examples as you can and certainly spend your time on this and other Maserati forums. It will be time well spent and will allow you to maximise your enjoyment with your car. For example there are numerous threads on service experience/advice on this and other forums such as: http://www.maseratilife.com/forums/granturismo/11308-one-year-service-$700.html

Hi,

as for the mileage, the SD3 computer will give a reading from the ECU rather than the odometer (which is digital anyway). Buy on condition, if a car is tatty no matter what the claimed mileage walk away. Its preferrable to buy from a main dealer as if there are any issues later they'll be able to correct them. If you do buy outside the main dealer network get an independant inspection and try to buy a car with the manufacturers warranty still running.

Thanks.

I think I will get one from the main dealer now, just don't fancy the hassle and risks of buying private with no come back etc and not much less on price.

I've heard some stories about some very sophisticated clockers who can alter the milage not only on the dash, but in the ECU, even change the total engine running time to fit!
