Evening,

I thas been a while since i took the car apart so I thought I would remove the rocker covers and plenium to paint them.

The plug leads come off easily 4 and 5mm allen key.

The actual cover is held on by 12m 5mm head bolts and 3 double ended bolts that needs a long 10mm socket. The bolts at the back are tricky to get at as the pipes from the break master cylinder stop you from getting a socket in there.

You can really see how much oil vapour leaks out of the breather pipe.

The small plastic breather elbow attached to the rocker cover is pressure fitted and glued in - ie it won't come out without breaking, and Meridian have none left. I will just mask it up and spray around it.

Jim pointed out that there is a lot of oil in the rocker boxes that never drains down and gets removed - I will syringe it out.

Plenium.

It was actually easier than i thought.

The front part where the throttle body is, is held in by 4 finger tight screws and an air pipe>

The fuel rails / injectors have lots of little clips on them but other than that they just un bolt and pull out. I disconnected the the fuel lines at the rear of the rail - 17mm spanner. Small amount of fuel leaks out not a huge amount.

The real tricky bit was the round metal dome bit attached to the rear, there are hundreds !!! of pipes and wires going into and around it. I ended up removing it from the back of the plenium before removing the plenium itself. You are then left with the 2 brown connectors and 4 breather pipes. A big fat one that goes into the bottom - you can see it until you start to lift the plenium, 3 little ones that you can see at the top. I managed to snap 1 of the black plastic connectors - i pray these still exist.

I now need to strip all the little bits of the plenium before getting it painted.

Amoungst the leaves you can see the starter motor, it looks a real pig to get out.

I am now away for a week so wont be able to finish but will update as soon as i get back.

All the dull aluminium parts (fuel rails throttle body etc) I plan to get polish or plated just to make them look nicer. There is a french guy on enrico's site who had his zinc plated, looks good and shiny but too shiny ?

I will replace all the bolts with SS ones and generally try to clean as i go along.

They look a bit grubby but do they need painting? Will they not just clean up?

Graham's very particular about his red bits!!

this is both fascinating and terrifying at the same time!

I'm surprised you didn't have to completely remove the fuel pressure regulator (metal dome) between the brown connectors (the air temp senders).

Time to get the hoover on those leaves!

well done so far!

Evening,

I looked at cleaning them, but that runs the risk that the plenium ends up a slightly different shade of red ? they are off now I may aswell get them painted.

I have stripped everything off the plenium now and was surprised how oily the inside was. Clearly as the oil vapours vent into the airbox it just ends up coating everything.

I am now on holiday for a week but when i return i will get them painted and start to rebuild it !!.

I had my plenum and cam covers repainted last time my car was serviced. Not an identical shade of red but close enough and certainly looks much better! Can post a pick?

i know bob houghtons in northleach can do the "crackle" painting might be worth a call. its a very toxic prossess apparently and not everyone does this. Bear aluminium parts can be glass bead blasted and they come up as new!

Bits dropped off at the painters yesterday, will post pics as soon as they are returned. They are also polishing the aluminium parts as they have tarnished over time.

The little plastic bits at the back of the plenium just to the inside the two brown connectors (pic 4 on the second post). One of these snapped, Maserati have none left, luckily they have replaced them with brass ones.

BUT they have none of those left either............................. I am sure Pibbow might have a spare one....

Bill you can buy cans of VHT wrinkle paint, just spray it on and heat it to get wrinkles.

Johnny if the pics are on your blog i will find them.

In view of the sheer amount of oil inside the plenium and aiways I will re route the oil vapour pipe into a clear plastic bottle (it is see through) if it works i will look into a shiny catch tank.

you'll need to vent the bottle, Graham...

otherwise it'll go "pop"!

that's what's happening at the moment; the gas is "vented" back into the intake manifold and it has a degree of vapour in it. Kind of like an emissions regulatory thing...

How are they going to polish the aluminium bits...?

Good holiday...?

Evening,

Parts are back ! I have been sidelined with fitting a new bathroom.

A little dissappointed with the finsh, they are "textured" rather than heavily wrinkled, but as with all freshly painted bits they are nice and shiny. They are not that bad that i would want to re do them so will put the car back together.

The aluminium parts have polished up quite nicely, i will rub them down with a fine paper and some metal polish before re fitting them.

Are you recovered now, Del?

gosh- that's quite a result!

I wouldn't be unhappy with that; you'd have to possess a  microscopic knowledge of cam cover textures to see the distinction I think. Have you new bolts for the cam covers or have they been treated also? And you've managed to source some brass right angle hose unions to replace the plastic ones?

I've realised looked at you former shots that those two hoses are the absolute pressure sensor intakes; one for each engine management unit.

What kind of compound are you going to use on the aluminium parts with the sandpaper?

any chance of another shot of the starter motor area; is it cleaned up?

Have a peek at my pictures of my engine bay also as I'm as anal as you:) For all others, If you too decide to repaint. Trust me it's sooo Easy!! As above take parts out, Either give to a kind friend to acid dip or Use the v quick nitromors paint remover. Careful as v powerful Then, call frosts paints 01706 758258 Ask for vht crinkle plus! In your chosen colour, pop manifold / cam covers in oven, for 5 mins at 180c Then after shaking back side off can Remove and place somewhere windless and spray at 45 degree angles back n forth A good 3 coats. Then walk away and allow to cool/dry/ crinkle up:) After a day v carefully, using light sandpaper in a block Rub over mazer emblem etc n tadaa! Also all parts can be sprayed and using a hair dryer on hot, painted n dried:) Ps!!! Del mar don't use stainless bolts get zinc ones As don't corrode n zinc alot shinier:)
