Hi all,

Came back from a 2 week vacation and knew that the car wasn't going to start as I hadn't driven it for three weeks. The local recovery came and started it and told me battery and charge was ok but to drive it for at least 45 mins. No problem I thought.

But as I'm driving I can feel the car feels lumpy and under idle the car sounds very uneven. Acceleration is fine and all systems work ok so I wind down the window and under slowing down there is an almighty clattering coming from somewhere in the engine bay, car sounds like a tractor/diesel. Under acceleration the engine sounds ok but slowing down the noise is very obvious.

Would you have any idea what this could be? A friend thinks it is the cambelt on the way out but seems unlikely with only 30,000 km? No warning lights on the dash either.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris,

The good news is that the Quattroporte V is not fitted with a cambelt so this cannot be the problem. My suggestion is that you arrange for the car to be connected to Maserati diagnostic equipment through a main agent or an independant specialist.  This is not an expensive process and is an important first step to identifying the issues. Best of luck.

Regards,

Sure, car is still under warranty and is being handed in tomorrow. Still, I'm curious if this a common fault?

Chris,

Maseratis have an improved reputation for reliability although of course faults can still arise. Please let us know how you get on.

Chris - did you get to the bottom of this. I have just moved my 4200 back into my garage and there is an awful clattering noise when it is stood in neutral.

The garage kept the car for about a week and then I went to pick it up. As the car was started by the service manager there was a hell of clattering noise which he said was normal...I protested that now way was this normal but the noise did not re-appear as the car warmed up. Kept the car for the weekend and several more noises started as well as the clattering when starting from cold.

The car is now back in the garage for another week or so. They are going to change the whole variable cam system (is this correct?), sensors etc in hoping this will fix the problem.

The hydraulic tappets make a sound until the engine warms up, however as you say its very loud then its probably a fault somewhere. Is your car under warranty still? In my experience main dealers just swap bits until it starts working again rather than diagnosing the fault first. Maybe due to the low number of cars they see they don't get a chance to become familiar with the regular faults.

Hoping they do a proper job - especially as it is under warranty. Though main dealers love cars under warranty, not all have enough technically experienced staff to realise the benefit for us owners. I have found HR Owen in Acton, London to be excellent in this regard. Their chief technician has been working with Ferraris and Maseratis for over 16 years and knows theses cars inside out.

I would be curious to know which dealer you are using and wether you are happy they eventually sort your car out properly. If not, rather than getting tough with them (as their technical ability may be limited), it may be an idea to take it to a another dealer with more experienced technicians.
