Hi All,

An update on my project 2003 Coupe CC, it arrived on Wednesday with a flat battery...probably been sitting at the salvage yard for months. I've already sourced a new rear wheel and the front wing from ebay and I think I've found a front subframe, to be confirmed on Monday. Last night after charging the battery for 30 hours the car started first turn of the key, and I saw no worrying lights on the dashboard...and it went happily into gear. With some careful manoevring I got it into the yard without hitting any walls, there's only a couple of cm clearance. What a sound that engine makes!
Between turning it off and going back later to try and identify some of the dashboard indicators the voltage on the battery had dropped from 14 to 8, so the battery is probably knackered.

I've seen on this forum lots of mention of the F1 pump and it's failures...can anyone explain why they fail and why there's a suggestion to change the relay regularly? I'd like to do anything I can to minimise the likelihood of that happening.

There'll be a bunch more questions...what oil to use in the engine, whether to change the gearbox oil, etc., the mileage on the odometer is only 34k but it seems to have had quite a hard life looking at the interior, wear on the driver's seat bolster and so on, maybe it's genuine though, I might try and ring Graypaul, who made the plates, to see if they have a service record for it.

Enough rambling...it'll be a busy weekend!

Alan

The relay fails first, causing the pump to remain on. That caused pump failure. Relay£ < Pump£ to fix :)

Alan,

The F1 Pump is let down by a relay, it is adviced to change the relay to prevent the pump from overheating and burning out every couple of years.

Seat bolsters wear out quickly and mine looks poor after 50k.

Good luck with the project.

fellas,

spoke to Grimaldi about changing the F1 relay as a routine measure - rob says he sees no reason to, as a faulty relay wont cause pump failure and that it's basically a red herring.....

not sure which is correct....

Well, the battery seems to be OK, amazingly. I've got all the obvious bits I need, front subframe, wing and two wheels for around £750 off ebay, and started dismantling the front suspension. This weekend is booked out..:-) There aren;t half a lot of wires under there, all neatly fixed to the same subframe that has to come off... and I'll have to support the engine as well so I bought a support beam that goes across between the inner wings, probably never use that again. I think everything else seems OK mechanically apart from the front discs which look a bit worn, and the interior is great, just a little wear on the driver's seat bolster and the chrome flaking. The driver's side window winder is a bit faulty too, seems like a gear might have stripped a tooth.

I'll stick some pictures up next week in case anyone's interested.

Another update: I finally got the front subframe off on Monday, after struggling with many stiff bolts, and stripped it down. I'll try and post some pictures, not that it's possible to see the problems really wihtout seeing the real thing.

The crash heavily damaged the left front wing, and once the subframe was off, it was clear that the damage to the left front suspension was limited to the subframe, nothing to the wishbones or hubs etc., fortunately(and as expected from the inspection we gave it at the salvage yard). Effectively the oval tube that supports the wishbones is twisted so that the lower one is further out, and the upper one further in, thus resulting in the wheel leaning inwards. The chassis leg has also move inwards a little but that can be spaced from the replacement subframe.

I've got a new wing off ebay (advertised as for a 3200, on enquiry they said it had holes for bolting on, and as expected it was the correct one)  and a replacement subframe from a Spyder being broken in Poole, they advertised the engine and gearbox on ebay, but had the subframe as well. £300 as opposed to nearly £700...not bad! The steering rack needs new inner ball-joints, and I found a mention on the forum of Power Steering Services, who will recondition those for £30 each, which seems a bargain compared to the price of the rack!

Another couple of weekends, and it should be done apart from the painting and MOT/VIC check. At this rate the insurers shouldn't have written it off!!!

Hi Peter,

It's actually more a case of a) not being frightened of it and b) having mates who can help...all of which, with the inclusion of this list, are possible. You also have to be willing to spend the time...

Cheers,
Alan

Alan just read you post today,   double check that wing, 3200 wings dont fit 4200  s    they are very similar and look the same but believe me they dont fit there are differences when you look closely, i know from previous experience  when eurospares sent me out a 3200 wing instead of a 4200    they were well pleased to pay the carriage and take it back as 3200 wings are/were around £280 dearer  worth checking

regards loz

The wings are different, the 32 is longer on the front edge, the 42 ends shorter, amazing, 2 inches difference in it, and twice the price!

Hi chaps,

Actually the wing is the correct one...I'd already looked at a 3200 for salvage and rejected it (the Assetto Corsa that was in Dartford) so Eurospares parts diagrams have been invaluable. When they advertised the wing as being a 3200 from 2003 I asked them if it had holes for bolt mounting (the 3200 is welded). I ended up straightening the subframe off my car in the end (with help from an expert assistant), the one from the breakers was lozenged and would have been more difficult to use than my own one.

One strange thing: the lower left wishbone was missing part of the tubing inside the rubber bush when I went to put it back...I can't see how I could have lost that in the process of dismantling so I think it must have been fitted like that, which would have allowed for some very strange results from the front. No wonder the inside edges of the tyres were shot. Also the engine mountings were both delaminated. I'm now in waiting mode, needing a few parts to finish it. It also turns out to have been CAT D instead of CAT C, so no VIC check needed.

I've taken a bunch of pictures, but can't find the USB cable for my camera...as soon as I do I'll put them up. I wondering what examples of poor maintenance I'll find next!

Cheers,
Alan

Least thats some good news re the wing  Alan, just that the way your post read     is that you had purchased a wing advertised for a 3200 and i know from previous experience that to look at they are very similar at first glance   lets hope she's done soon  and the parts your looking for  fall into your lap for peanuts ,   have you tried David Askews   good for quite a few bits  and good prices

regards loz

Hi Loz,

I've ordered all the new bits from Eurospares now, i didn't know they could be got any cheaper. Not to worry I feel I've done pretty well so far. Andrew's doing the wheels too...so once all the bits come in I'll be nearly there. I reckon a month to 6 weeks, and a bit for the painting. I expect then once I get it on the road and find out what's actually wrong rather than what just appears to be wrong...:-)

Cheers,

Alan

OK, let's try again with some pictures: this should be the damage close-up...shame you can't see the wing clearly, but the suspension is visible...it turned out that the wishbones and hub were fine, the mounting tower for the upper wishbone was pushed inwards.
