Hi There,

I have just bought a late 06 QP sport GT & have noticed a slightly worrying rattle on intial cold start up...

This lasts for only half a second or so, untill the oil is circulating... Do i need to worry? is this common? or is this a sign of impending problems?

Car has covered 36K

Thanks in advance

Dave

Can you describe the rattle in a lot more detail? Have you tried to isolate where it is coming from e.g. Under bonnet, under car, exhaust area etc.?

I too have a rattle on start-up on my 2008 8k mile Granturismo S. To me it sounds like the exhaust or a heat shield as it comes from under the car, it only happens on start up when its cold and only for a maximum of 1 second or so. It's been into the dealer for them to look at it and they replaced one of the rear silencers under warranty but this didn't fix the problem (an expensive mistake on their part!). It's going in for further investigation in a couple of weeks so I'll keep you updated.

The rattle is mechanical rotation.....due to no oil pressure during the initail cranking over...

I guess the residual oil has drained from the top end & the circulating oil takes a moment to pressurise the top end??

I am having the Oil & Filter changed on Friday as precaution.....

Just wanted to know if the start up rattle is common or am i the lucky one..

Cheers

Hi,

my QP does the same and I've nearly had it three years now and no problems. My thought is that it maybe the baffles in the exhaust which once hot expand and can't rattle anymore. Like you said only when cold, once warm it doesn't happen.

On my third Maserati now, this didn't happen on my GS but got top end rattles on my QP and it also happens on my GT which I have now had for 3.5 years. I have had this since the car was new It doesn't appear to get any worse and only happens occasionally when the engine is cold.

mechanical rotation...

top-end rattle...

Don't want to tread on anyone's toes here, not being an owner of the modern cars but is it not a catalyst issue??

It's quite common in Italian cars to get a light tinkling on startup which then goes away due to heat/expansion. It would last a few minutes. If you could "hear" the engine due to lack of initial oil-pressure you'd have serious problems!

Perhaps someone could post a recording from their phone...?
