Ah, the duplicity of man...

I'd mentioned a problem with the handbrake to my garage. Just spoken with him and am slightly horrified to discover that on one side there is no brake lining and no shoes - the rust is apparently so thick that there would have been a minimal effect if any. On the other side the whole assembly inside the drum has been removed. Effectively the handbrake is completely useless.

Whic is interesting as the car was MOT'd between me testing it and the car being delivered to me. It was supposed to have been serviced too although that's being passed off as something that wouldn't be checked unless it had failed the MoT.

I'm really trempted to phone the previous owner to find out if he ever used the handbrake. And maybe to see if there's anything else taken off that might be quite useful to have around...

I might post the pics if they're really scary/amusing/horrifying.

This might call for a nice stiff whisky.

How old is the car,and how many miles. Certainly worth a mention to the previous  owner who must have known. Look forward to pics.

And, for comparison, the bits it should have. Although these are very rusty and wouldn't have done much braking!

When was the MOT done? Might be worth a chat....if they want to keep their license!

I've spoken to the inspectors at VOSA and they can't do anything as we've stripped the vehicle down - just doing that alone means the testing garage could argue that we've removed the parts.

Somewhat more worrying is the fact that an advisory note for the handbrake and shocker was issued but I didn't get to see that. Would appear, on face vaule, that the dealer chose to ignore the notice....

Spoke to trading standards already - so long as the dealer pays for/does the remedial work then fine. If he refuses then that's a different issue - long and torturous but different!
