Hi Chaps,

Have been looking in to Selenia Oil, which as we all know is quite expensive. I found that the manufacturer used to be owned by Fiat. That same manufacturer also makes their own brand of Racing oil, which was developed in conjunction with Mercedes Formula 1, so it must be top class.
The manufacturer is PETRONAS and their oil is Syntium Racer X1 10w-60.
This oil is not inexpensive, but it might just be an option to look out for.

Cheers
Hopefully

Sounds like a pretty good alternative to me, Lets see what the more technically minded members think.
Thanks for the Info.

Selenia Racing 10W60 remains the only engine oil recommended by the Factory for 3200s. At approx £42 for 5 litres it is not at all expensive and in fact comparable to other equivalent oils of the same quality. There is therefore no point in using alternatives

If you need further info then do a search on this site for Selenia

hope this helps

As per Nigelo's link, shop4parts supplies Selenia, and it's not particularly expensive.

Hi Chaps,

The other seller I found was Ricambio who were quite reasonable.
Regarding the recommendation's, of course Maserati would recommend one of their own group branded products, they make more money on it. Maserati do not produce the oil, just as they do not produce their brake discs, which are more than 100% more expensive than the manufacturer who makes them and another group brand who fit them. Naturally nobody should look at inferior oils unless they have a few cells missing, but neither should we blindly exclude all others because a manufacturer wants us to buy theirs. I am looking in to super oil specifications, such as Selenia & Syntium, to see how they all technically compare with each other. When I reach a conclusion and that may, or may not be Selenia that comes top, I will try to tell the forum.
As for horses and drinking, enough said?

Cheers
Robert

Hi Sniffer,

Well that basically says it all and very well explained too.
For those who wish to follow the car manufacturer recommended oils, then they will continue to be happy. For those who wish to potentially increase specification of the oils they use, then there is a great choice out there and if you get more for your money, even better.

Cheers
Hopefully

Yeah, the mass-debate again ! About two years ago, just after I purchased my 3200,I queried the use of 10W 60 oil on this forum as it seemed extremely odd that such a viscous oil was recommended. I have used a 0W 40 oil and have had no problems. After asking around the Maserati & Ferrari mechanics I find that this oil grade is perfectly OK for normal use. In my opinion Maserati recommends the viscous 10W 60 grade for two reasons. Firstly, the viscous grade helps cut the oil consumption which is a characteristic of the 3200 engine. Secondly, this car,by it's very nature is prone to get thrashed unmercifully by those who think it's a race car,so a more viscous oil will tend to save the engine from destruction under unsympathetic use by mindless drivers. In my naievety I assumed the Poms would pay less for oil than we do. How wrong,42 squids for 5 litres of oil is daylight robbery !

Nice theory but misguided and factually incorrect. Selenia is produced by FLSelenia which is wholly owned by Petronas (Malaysian Government) and parted company from Fiat over 30 years ago. That's 2 decades before the 3200 was conceived.

As for Selenia Racing @ £42 for 5 litres being "daylight robbery", you may be interested in the pricing (courtesy of Opie Oils) of other mainstream 10w60 fully synth oils, although I make no comment as to their suitability or equivalence:

Castrol Edge £50 for 5 litres (actually priced at £39.98 for 4 litres)

Millers £55.73 for 5 litres

Shell Ultra Helix £65.05 for 5 litres (actually priced at £13.01 per litre)

Mobil 1 Extended life £63.05 for 5 litres (actually priced at £12.61 per litre)

hope this helps

Clip from Petronas / Selenia Racing:
As it meets and exceeds the quality requirements of the major Manufacturers, Selenia Racing can be used in all naturally aspirated, turbo-charged or multi-valve engines of any make and capacity.
Maserati recommend: SAE 10w-60 Multi-Grade, Semi-Synthetic Lubricants, THAT EXCEED API SG-CD-CCMC-G5,  which is quite an old oil specification compared to present standards. From the Manual.
So if the manufacturer says LUBRICANTS THAT EXCEED the above specification, who are we to argue?
Now is Selenia Racing 10w-60 a semi, or fully synthetic oil? As the Maserati manual says semi-synthetic, but suggests Selenia Racing, is this a contradiction, or do they have to be non-restrictive. Their seems to be some debate on this subject and different strokes for different folks, which is fine.

Cheers
Hopefully

Selenia Racing, it must be pointed out, have also recently downgraded the TBN, presumably a cost saving excercise, but the retail stays the same.

TBN is actually the reserve alkanity of the lube and a reduction is NOT a downgrade - see the following post and note the last paragraph.

http://www.maseratiforum.co.uk/m_31861/mpage_1/tm.htm#32106

SR is fully synthetic as referenced in my previous post

hope this helps

Hi Nigelo,

If the TBN is reduced it means that the ability to deal with alkalinity is reduced, so a more frequent oil change is preferable, this is a downgrade.
If the Maserati manual recommends Semi-Synthetic, then you are saying a fully synthetic is OK really?
It's all really interesting.
