It appears Maserati use the 10W60 Selenia oil as well, remembered this post on an Alfa forum and thought you might be interested too :)

I asked Petronas if the 10/60 Racing was still ok for a 3200 - this is the reply ....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The characteristics of the SELENIA RACING are still adequate for your car. The correct drain interval, to avoid that the TBN value decreases too much, is 20.000 km.

Best regards

Hi all, I always put castrol edge sport 10/60 in my lotus esprit, and opie oils shows this as the recommended oil for the maserati 3200 also, any thoughts which is better?

The only recommended engine oil for the 3200 is Selenia Racing 10w60. Do Opie Oils, as good as they maybe, know better than the factory? In a word, no.

As for the link provided to the Alfa forum, the posters there still seem to believe FLselenia is owned by Fiat. It is not and hasn't been for over 30 years!! It is currently owned by Petronas, effectively the Malaysian Government.

Regarding TBN and its reduction, the Alfa bods have all assumed that this is bad news and degrades the value and efficiency of the oil.

As some will know, I work in the Shipping industry. The marine diesel engines on our Ships always have to match the TBN of the cylinder oil (bottom end lube is a separate system) with the acidity of the fuel actually being used. In close quarter manouevering such as entering port, they will switch from Intermediate Fuel Oil to Marine Diesel Oil (or at least a mixture of the two) for more reliabilty. Since the FO is a residual fuel it contains a high proportion of Sulphur and therefore the combustion deposits are highly acidic needing a much higher TBN than the refined MDO.

Some years back on one of these engines, we had some piston damage caused by operating on the MDO for too long a period with cylinder oil being mismatched (by the engineroom staff) having too high TBN. This had caused a rapid and excessive build up of calcium deposits on the piston crown leading to its overheating and ultimately failure. These engine are turbocharged 2 stroke diesels and produce huge power - about

The point is that the TBN value has to match the fuel and when mixed with combustion products should neutralise same but never over compensate. Too much alkalinity is just as bad as too much acidity. Could it therefore be that changing the composition of gasoline by decree of the damn EU governments by insisting on a proportion of bio fuel, has actually changed the acidity of the fuel and therefore the characteristics required from the lube oil? I do not know the answer to that one but I am guessing is has a lot to do with it. No matter, most 3200 owners will change the engine oil well before 20,000 kms.

hope this helps

Be carefull, the maserati 3200 original service manual requires oil change every 10K Km!

Well pointed out Bernard although my comment addressed Saint's quoted communication from Petronas / FLselenia giving their max service life for the oil. That is twice that specified by Maserati which of course must prevail.

hope this helps

Further more on the reduction of the tbn of the selina 10w60 oil,the reduction is quiet significant as it has been reduced down to a PH 8.6.as this is not far off neutral as ph7 is neutral.so there fore considerably reducing its ability to neutralise acids from the combustion process. This reduction is possibly in veiw of future manufacturing process in the main bearing and thrust washer areas of the oem,in the move away from lead based shells.as the material now being used is more suseptable to decay from a high alkalinty
The specificatiion of Castrol edge sport is equivalent if not superior to that of the selina in specification, and is considerably cheaper, and if the recomended oil for the buggati veyron it cannot be all that bad,

Deano, I think you are falling into a common trap of assuming that TBN is interchangeable with pH which is not correct - See this link for an excellent article on the subject particularly the "Readers Response to the Article" towards the bottom. The TBN is expressed as mg of KOH per gram made available to neutralise acidic contaminants, rather than its overall alkinity at any given time. It will therefore be clear that TBN of 7 (you stated pH 7) is nowhere near neutral and in fact still has considerable reserve, actually 7mg KOH per gram. Some motor lube oils had a TBN as low as 5

With respect, whatever oil a Veyron or any other engine may or may not use is completely irrelevant. Maserati turbo engines were designed and developed using Selenia and no other oil is recommended, period. This does not mean Castrol Edge, Shell Super Helix, AGIP Racing or any other 10W60 is not suitable. They may well be suitable whereas Selenia Racing most definitely is.

hope this helps

Hi Nigelo,

Lot's of points of view, great.
I would think Maserati Turbo Engines were designed and built, full stop, as is normal. Then they decided on a suitable lubricant. As Maserati give a lubricant specification than can be used, or exceeded, this naturally opens the door to use any top quality lubricant that exceeds the minimum specification. I don't think for one minute that an actual brand has any bearing on the matter at all. Selenia Racing is only a recommendation, if they tried to force this on anyone they would face substantial litigation from other oil manufacturers.
A recommendation is just that, a statement giving the minumum performance specification of a lubricant is quite significant, a further statement saying this is the minumum and it can be exceeded, is also quite significant. Let's all keep an open mind to the leaps forward in technology.
I just phoned my local Maserati Dealer for a price on an oil change and they now use SHELL HELIX???

Jesus, do we really have to reawaken 3 year old threads about engine oil?!

Well said Nigel, can this subject be kept to one thread (so we can avoid it) currently it is a running debate on two threads

I'll drop mine, I think it's resolved now anyway.

Cheers
hopefully
