I've got a trip coming up that will take in Scotland, Cumbria and York, and I'm asking myself which car should I take? There are fears of public car parks and getting it dirty after some long walks that we've got planned. I've checked with the hotels to ensure the parking is secure so if we're just popping in to town then I'll teach her how to take a bus.
That leaves the unclean question. When we're walking I know it will rain and therefore we'll return to the car muddy and wet, it will be parked in a gravel (at best) car park in the middle of nowhere and we'll be driving down some narrow windy lanes.
So should it be the day car or the Maserati?

having recently done the three peaks (national one) in my maserati, and I can honestly say, take the masser, if it gets dirty... wash it, don't wrap it in cotton wool, if you are doing an epic journey why not do it in style. also if you take the masser you sometimes get better parking, the guy that own's the drunken duck in the lake district is a big fan, and for a 5 min run in it, he can always make a table for you.

but then again, I use my masser for everything as I like driving it so much, vet runs, trips to the municipal dump, etc.

Agree with you Robbie. Why have it if you will worry about it to the point of not driving it. Take the Masa and enjoy it!!

The Drunken Duck,
That takes me back,as a kid we used to go waterskiing on windermere every weekend.
I went into the Drunken Duck and had my first pint at thirteen.
Its been downhill ever since.

Those comments and a completely different conversation I had last night has convinced me. It's the Maserati.

And a recommendation for a drinking hostelry! After a walk we'll have a go at looking for this Drunken Duck to rest our weary selves.

scotland's a big place, can you narrow it down a bit? but of you are heading west, then the drovers inn, is one to see and believe, reputed to be the oldest pub in scotland (several have that calim) and it doesn't look like it's had a cleaner since it opened... but the food is ace. can also recommend the sheeps heid inn in edinburgh, again, supposed to be the oldest.

For Cumbria,

Try Lucy 4'S for evening nibbles [tapas type meals] and a good night out in Ambleside. If you are after a cosy night by an open fire try the Queens Head Troutbeck and their Lamb Shank with a pint of Blue Bird or a nice St Emillion [one near Bowness not Keswick]. If you are after somthing special try http://www.lenclume.co.uk/ for a wonderful 10 course meal and nice rooms.

In Scotland we'll be in Dundee, staying down the road at the Taychreggan Hotel. I mention it because it has a great view from the rooms over the Tay and one or two whiskys worth trying, well actually more like 400. I'm up to 10 so far, so they'll be getting a bit more business from me for a few years, or at least until my cheeks turn rosey! And importantly the parking is off road and all the friendly staff are keen to talk about the Maserati. They don't see so many round there apparently.
Thanks for the other suggestions, I'll see how many we can try.

It's amazing how times have changed when booking accomodation. First it was based on price, then after a few errors location was good to check, then does it have a bar. Now the questions are is there wifi (ug, but it has to be done or it's impossible when I get back) and is the parking off road and secure.

We had a good trip around the country. The car performed well. It got filthy so it had a pre wash on Sunday and a final one and polish will be made next weekend.
From this trip I can confirm that you need to avoid reverse as much as possible to save the clutch. One of the places we stayed had a very tight parking position on an incline and got to via a bridal path. After some very careful manouvering in 1st and reverse you could certainly smell the clutch. It's done less than 1,000 miles since new and I don't want to replace it just yet so on subsequent evenings I found a quicker and easier way to park. I was quite surprised one evening to find another car in the parking spot.
When crossing Windermere the ferry pilot noticed my wife monitoring that I didn't bottom the front as I was boarding so he kindly pushed the ferry hard up the ramp to flatten it out. Then when we arrived at the other side after all the other cars had banged their way off the ferry the pilot did the same again for us.
Managed to find and try out the Drunken Duck. The food was good. The beer was better.
Found a great Inn in the centre of York that had secure parking behind large locked gates. The landlord was so impressed that he had a Maserati in there he took all his regulars out back to show them his new car and then the women had asked if the real owner was married!!
