What do you guys use for speed camera detection. I am using a tomtom with the fixed camera positions installed. I am looking for a radar/laser detector. Does anyone have any experience with them and which ones are best?

I use my eyes mainly for fixed cameras!  If your problem is mobile cameras then surely it's your reaction time against theirs and if you are booked  you shoudn't have been doing the speed because you didn't react in time!

Hi Blake,
We always found any of the Bel makes of detectors to be the best at detecting radar and laser. The problem with laser detection tends to be that the laser guns have a far greater range than the detector in your car, so by the time your detector beeps to warn you, it's too late because your speed has already been recorded.
Drive safely,
Cheers,
Ronnie

Where do you place the laser jammers on the car Strickers? Am i right in saying that as the number plate tilts down they have to use the headlights to aim at?

Sits behind the grille as advised by my local installer, however no way to guarantee that it works as to do so would be to drive at a police van very quickly to see what happens, not that confident!

Beams are best reflected of any flat surface and the No plate is ideal as it also provides a good record of the cars ID...My garage door opener is fitted just under the front plate inside the splitter...door opens a treat

My HTC Desire HD android phone has an 'app' by Blitzer called SCDB, it works a treat as it updates mobile speed cameras via the net and uses the phone's GPS to know where it is. It's free too.
It gives a visual and aural indication of speed cameras and the speed you should be doing. If you do spot a mobile camera that the 'app' didn't warn you about. there is a one button function to warn others by submitting the camera.

I highly recommend it, and I also recommend doing the speed limit!

I think the effectiveness of detectors and diffusers is marginal at best. As said before, by the time you've detected the beam, it can have captured your speed.  Factor in reaction time and you're definitely done for.

I use the GPS based camera alert in the satnav I have on my iphone to alert about Gatso and Truvelo.  For mobile cameras, you just have to keep your eyes open, although the Speedcamera POI you can install on some natnavs from http://www.pocketgpsworld.com includes common mobile camera locations, I find that on busy A-roads it's going off all the time.

Has anybody's front number plate accidentally fell off? Saw a GT without the front plate a while back and it was stunning, the front plate just distrupts the flow somewhat.
How would PC Plod react if the front plate fell off just a mile or so before?

I guess the mobile spped camera can't snap you if there's no front plate?

Must be honest, I've had similar thoughts.

I understand that if your plate has just fallen off and you get pulled, you get asked to replace it.  I seem to recall it can be a £60 fine if the so chose.
