Trofeo MC - Goldstein/Sundberg Advance In The Standings

At the end of the two Oschersleben races of the fifth round of the Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC, the championship’s leading duo, Goldstein/Sundberg, move further ahead - even if just a bit - away from their direct adversary, Pietro Zumerle.

In the morning’s first race, run in the fog, the Swedish driver was the winner: After leading undisturbed for most of the race, Sundberg noticed a problem with a tire that made him lose ground to Zumerle himself, who tried to overtake him without success at the last curve before reaching the finish line. Francesco La Mazza, protagonist of an exciting, hard-fought battle with Gaetano Ardagna Perez and Austrian Sven Heyroswky, earned the third place on the podium, his first of the season.

In the second race, the victory went to Paolo Necchi, who started off from pole position, and who led the race from the first. Second place was for Sergio Rota, who at the end had to defend himself from Emanuele Smurra’s attempt to overtake him. Smurra nullified his good performance up to then by leaving the track twice in the space of a few hundred yards, thus also losing third place to Ardagna Perez.

Fighting for the first two positions, the two most watched drivers —Goldstein and Zumerle— left the track at the first curve after start-off, and had to gain lost ground to return to the top positions. In the end it was the Italian who got up to sixth position (marking the fastest lap, the 7th in 1:38.475), while his rival Goldstein finished eighth.

In conclusion, it was a positive result primarily for leaders Goldstein/Sundberg, who only had a one-point advantage up to last Friday, while now they come away from Germany with a four-point margin over Zumerle. The championship remains nevertheless open and anything can still happen in the remaining two rounds of the Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC.

Paolo Necchi: “I am very happy about my victory in the Trofeo Maserati. It was a win that occurred at the end of a not-so-good day because while I was in third position in race 1, I was the victim of the nth bad episode of the season: I got a flat tire and blew my chance at a potential place on the podium. Since I started off from pole position in race 2, I was sure I could expect a good result because I was safe from attacks from the very first curve. It wasn’t exactly a piece of cake because Rota was very close, especially in the first part of the race, but then I was able to make some room between us and defended it until the waving of the checkered flag. This victory has enabled me to earn crucial points for the championship”.

Steven Goldstein: “Starting off from eighth position, I aimed at Zumerle as a reference point, but in checking his position I braked too late and got stuck in the sand. This episode forced me to climb back up and so in the end any points gained are more than welcome. This weekend I think I was finally able to find the right feeling for the car, something that had been missing up to now. We clearly need to try to avoid mistakes in the next rounds and hope we also have luck on our side”.
