Would appreciate members' views on tyres for a QP 4.2 (2005)

I'm currently on Pirelli P Zero Rosso on all 4, but the rear 2 are <cough> a little "slick" and Mr Plod will no doubt tell me off if he sees them.

i could replace like with like but does anyone have views on alternative or better tyres. Have read a lot of good stuff about the new Conti Sport Contact v5 but i dont think they are available yet. Likewise Michelin have always been my choice on my Alfa, but they tend to be hugely pricey.

thoughts welcome!

Scott, Had rear P Zero's and got 7.000km out of them. Other people seem to have the same issue, something to do with a softer rubber compound. Had also noise issues after first 2.000km. No Pirelli's for me, I'm afraid. First 1.000km on Yokohama's Advan tyres have been nothing than great. Very silent, comfortable and much cheaper than Pirelli's: 400€ less for a set. My first choice were Conti's, but rear size in 18" aren't available.

thanks for the very quick response!! i will check out the Yokohamas - mine are 19inch on the rear so hope they have that size. i just cant part with £350 for each rear tyre with the Pirellis...and i dont find they give that much grip - especially when cold i get no grip in 1st gear!

Keep us posted on your choice - I am halfway through a set of 4 Pzero's

I have used etyres who had a good range for the Maser (I am on 20inch) and they fit them at your house.

Just to add to the thread:  MOT due this week and all four tyres just about shot - rears below legal  and that's after just 10K miles in the last year.  Anyway, I've been reading the various forums and independent reviews (not just Maserati!) and based on that just replaced all my Pirelli's with Falken FK452's.  I'm running 19" rims with 245/40's on the front and 285/35 on the rear.   I've only had them on for three days, but put 200 miles on them already - mixed motoring, wet and dry.  So far I'm impressed, road noise not noticeable, grip and ride appears perfect.  Of course, only time will tell and I'll keep the thread updated as time (and miles) goes on.

BTW - cost for all four fitted and balanced (they even came to house!) £676! That's £400 cheaper than P-Zero's!

2 x 245/40ZR19 98Y FALKEN FK452 XL @ £161.80 per tyre
2 x 285/35ZR19 99Y FALKEN FK452 @ £176.20 per tyre

See www.event-tyres.co.uk they had four in stock - ordered Friday, fitted Monday.

A little trivia for you.  The tread wear is 220 on both front and back.  The old Pirelli's were 160 on back and 220 on fronts.  Hope that means the rears will last longer!  Finally, the tyre fitter's guide on "wheel bolt torque settings" didn't include data for the Maserati QP (no surprise there really).  The service manual didn't help either.  Thankfully Maranello's in Egham did - in case you're interested it's 100Nm (and I did search this forum first - without success ).  Good luck all...

When my car was on the dyno at DMS they mentioned that 160 was pretty soft rubber for a car of the QP's size. There was quite a smell of burning rubber after the runs. Main advantage of soft rubber is that the acceleration times of the line improve, down side is obviously wear. Not sure how you guys are wearing your tyres out so quickly, my set have been on 6,000 miles or so and there's still 3-4mm left. Have you had your suspension geometrys checked out?

I don't believe I'm unusual - a set of rear Pirelli's rarely last longer than 10-12K - and I'm not too heavy on the accelerator either (well, most of the time ).  Nothing wrong with my set-up and I actually had a good look at the old ones when they came off - wear was symetrical across the entire width - quite impressive really.

I must add that my fronts probably had a few more miles on them - they would have just about got through the MOT (according to the tyre fitter).  Anyway, I didn't want to mix brands so pumped up the money to get them all changed.  I've now got a spare set of fronts in the garage- just in case of emergencies ...

Hi, I was thinking more about Zoran who only got 7000km from his.

Do you find the Pirelli's seem to skip when driving over white lines? On some occasions I get this sensation , usually on motorways when moving over the white lines.

Would like to join your debate on tyres for QPs.  My 2007 GT runs with P Zero's and do not find handling or road noise a problem although a) I try to keep close to the speed limits and b) the noise varies greatly with road surface and condition.
However, would appreciate input from members on the wear experienced on the front two.  Both have succumbed to wear on the inside edges, being replaced last week because core threads showing!!
The newest of the 2 had done 12,500 miles but majority of the remaining tread was a good 5mm.  The problem was first noticed 4,000 miles ago but only on the older offside tyre and 2,500 miles after a Geometry check and adjustment.  I asked for a further Geometry check but no problem reported?
So, from a tyre which was showing signs of wear on the inside and a good one, to bare threads on both in 4,000 miles!

The guy replacing the tyres mentioned cambers (the car not the road) and also thought the pressure of 2 bars (29 psi) was too low so applied 2.4 bars (35 psi).  Car in for next 12,500 mile service next week and intend to raise the issue so any help will be appreciated.

Sorry about my first communication to the Forum on my Q4 tyres because I probably cause any reader to wonder what I am doing with one!!
The figure I quoted for the front tyre pressure is the REAR pressure.  Please read design pressure as 2.2 bar (31.9 psi).

Hi all,

The car went for it's MOT today and failed on the drivers front tyre

I got a couple of quotes for one 19 inch P Zero's ranging from £241 - £341 but managed to get one from a tyre garage in Colindale, London for £215 all in fitted including VAT so I'm back on the road now

Regarding the inside tyre wear - I recently had my QP GT Sport serviced by Migliori in Bromsgrove (great guys by the way) and both my front tyres were down to the threads on the insides. They explained that this is due to the standard 'toe in/out' set up and they they see this a lot on QP's. They have adjusted the set up on mine and I have to say the ride has improved.

Might be worth giving them a call ?

Cheers

Ian
